Landmark Bell School Fire Spurs Plans for New Build

An 1860s school in Williamsburg suffered a devastating February 20 1922 blaze destroying books records and library equipment valued at about 8000 with 5000 insured. The town fastens plans for a new building while continuing classes in other rooms and notes the old alma mater remains a cherished memory and guiding light for future knowledge. The Jackson township Farmers Institute program set for March 8 9 1922 at Marathon Ohio features sessions on soil needs costs of farm products and farm bureau topics with local leaders and speakers.

Day of pleading in indictments down to March 1

On last Friday the grand jury indicted several defendants. Ralph B Jones pleaded guilty to four counts including gambling on premises and carrying concealed weapons with various fines and a six month work house term, with suspension condition to leave the county. Karl Schoening was found guilty of possessing liquor and sent to the Ohio penitentiary for a year. Richard Jackson admitted abandoning a legitimate child and agreed to pay 12.50 monthly with a suspended penitentiary sentence. Ben Wilson pleaded not guilty to stealing and operating an auto. trial date not set. Court adjourned until March 1 with Judge Clevenger presiding in Judge Joseph’s absence.

The Batavia overall factory will reopen in a few days with Mr Winters as superintendent having moved nearby. The enterprise provides employment to many and is a benefit to the community.

The Hamilton Building Company secures a ten year lease with the Government for the post office room. New improvements include 200 lock boxes a fire proof safe and other government demands to modernize the facility. The setup suggests the government may outfit or own its own building.

Batavia residents of all ages report illness as a three day flu spreads through homes and schools. Many scholars were absent, parents confined, and doctors included among the affected with no fatalities reported yet.

Batavia Legion plans a Friday night production at the town hall with a full house anticipated. The ensemble has practiced for days, with period costumes and music set to match the entertainment, proceeds to benefit a good cause. Batavia Library Seeks Twenty Five Dollar Fund Drive

A Batavia businessman pledges to join twenty donors with five dollars each to replace worn library books. Since hearing of the offer eight more volunteers have joined, leaving eleven needed. More supporters will earn the Library Finance Committee’s gratitude as many books must soon be discarded.

Kid Band to Play at Ohio State Fair Next Autumn

The Manchester Adams county group known as the Kid Band with about fifty members aged eight to sixteen has been secured to perform at the Ohio State Fair in the upcoming autumn. The manager secured the job after applying. Milford will gain a new dairy plant for clarifying pasteurizing and bottling milk. Once operations start no milk will go to waste on farms and daily sales will show proceeds.

In Memory of George W Slade

George W Slade born September 25 1841 in Clermont County Ohio died February 6 1922 aged 80 years 4 months and 11 days. He served in the Civil War three years and fought in battles but was never wounded. He was a long time member of J H Jenkins Post 242 Grand Army of the Republic and Clermont Social Lodge 29 Free and Accepted Masons. He leaves a widow Ollive Wilson later Georgie Fitzwater five children and eight grandchildren. Card of Thanks from wife and children.

Mary J Avey born October 12 1889 on an Olive Branch Ohio farm died February 4 192% at her Mt Carmel Ohio home. She married Eugene Cross April 1 1868 and their daughter Dora Maude preceded her. She joined M B Church Olive Branch and served in Sunday school and Ladies Aid. Four weeks ago her brother Tom died. she leaves one sister and four brothers.

Two Horses Killed Crossing Tracks After Collision

James Weeks of Mt. Crab lost his team when crossing the N. and W. tracks Monday evening. The flyer engine struck and knocked the horses about 100 feet, killing them instantly. Weeks escaped unharmed. The train reportedly approached without warning.
