Death of Bethel Physician Ol’ Doc Thompson at 104

Dr. William Eberle Thompson, 104, oldest practicing physician in the nation, died at his Bethel home in the early hours. A Civil War surgeon, longtime I O O F member, he practiced 77 years and knew General Ulysses Grant. He leaves a daughter and granddaughter. funeral at Bethel Baptist Church with O. F. rites.

Howard Dunham Dies of Pneumonia at 22

Howard Dunham, 22, died Wednesday morning February 14 at his father Elam Dunham’s home on the Bethel Williamsburg pike. Death due to pneumonia after a brief illness. Survived by father Elam, a seriously ill mother, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral Saturday at Kennedy Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Interment in Newtonsville Cemetery.

Death of Mrs. Mettie Lewis in Batavia

Mrs. Mettie Lewis nee Bennett widow of W. W. Lewis of Batavia died February 16 after a long illness. She leaves son Ralph Lewis and daughters Mrs. Helen Hays and Mrs. Parker Adams. Funeral from her residence at 2 PM Monday. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her.

Gas Explosion Injures Local Boy At Batavia Grocery

Last Thursday Harley Brown of near Batavia, an employee at Malott grocery, dropped a lighted cigarette into a rear toilet vault causing a gas explosion. The blast blew him from the house, burning hair on his head and injuring his arm and hand. His father rushed him to a doctor. a readied gas leak under a ground line is suspected.

Laurel Institute Slated for February 23 24

Farmers from Monroe Township will attend the annual community farmers institute at Laurel M E Church on February 23 and 24. State speakers Ruth Steva and Charles Cookson will discuss farm and community topics. Officers include Rice Bolender as president Burton Smith as vice president Mildred Lamb as secretary and Geraldine Painter as hostess.

Ringer Pledges Aid to Ohio Pensioners

S A Ringer Republican of Leesburg pledges support to recover 1388000 withheld from Ohio Old Age Pensioners. He seeks aid from Tom Jenkins of the Tenth District and the Ohio State to address the presidential veto and related actions. Jenkins welcomed the effort in a Feb 10 letter from Washington D C thanking Ringer for his willingness to help.

Farmers Must Sign AAA Plan By May

Clermont County official urges farmers to sign the Farm Plan by May 1 to qualify for the AAA program. The plan sets allotments and soil building or conserving practices, promoting a shift to soil conserving crops to lower costs and reduce soil loss. Roush cites figures comparing three-year rotations: hay mix yields 10 500 feed units at 0.6 cent per unit with 28 tons soil loss versus 6 300 feed units at 1.3 cents per unit with 75 tons loss.

Campbell Home in Campbell Is Burned Wednesday

The home of Mrs. Emma Campbell near the northeast Bethel Corporation line was destroyed by fire Wednesday noon. A defective flue is suspected as the cause. Only a few household articles were saved due to rapid flames and distance from water mains. Mrs. Campbell was placed with her daughter Mrs. Frank White in Felicity for residence.

Clermont County Red Cross sets 1940 program details

At a February meeting the Clermont County Red Cross approved the year's program. Batavia office remains with Mrs. Rosanna Hogberg as secretary. Health education, glasses and health services, veteran welfare, disaster relief, foreign war aid, Junior Red Cross, and transient relief funded by a small appropriation are planned. Directors include Rev Vernon P. Martin Jr and Judge Hugh L. Nichols among others. Also notes that the last narrow gauge railway remains in western North Carolina.

Seven Teams Eliminated In Clermont County Girls Tourney

The Clermont County girls basketball tournament opened with Batavia defeating Bethel 50 to 19 and Felicity beating Amelia 44 to 18 at Batavia. Upsets continued Saturday as Owensville beat Williamsburg 24 to 20, Moscow routed Goshen 34 to 13, and Milford crushed New Richmond 39 to 16.

Four Newport men to face trial in Clermont burglary case

Jesse Brown 32 of Newport escapes custody in Cincinnati last Sept. 19. He and Ward Mercer Charles Harley and John Hall, all Newport residents, were extradited June 25 after a Clermont county burglary of two Goshen garages. Mercer Harley and Hall were convicted, Brown recaptured Feb. 9, with sentences of 1 to 15 years on each burglary charge.

WPA Load In Clermont County Falls Since January

L A Gillett District WPA Manager in Cincinnati says Clermont County's WPA load has fallen by over 300 since Jan 1 1939. The county now lists 560 employed or awaiting work with 171 awaiting assignments. county quota is 600. District wide 26 352 employed, 28 500 quota. 17 576 fewer since Jan 1 1939 with most workers moving to private industry.

Former Amelia Girl In Championship Triumph

Margaret Davis of Amelia High School helped the basketball team reach the A A U Championship in Greater Cincinnati. They defeated Patridge 28 to 7 Thursday night atpgp, with Davis advancing to the next round toward the title in Joseph, Missouri.
