A confidence man was reportedly captured near Madeira early Saturday morning. The incident follows a spate of similar crimes in the region, with authorities detailing ongoing investigations and public safety precautions.
Clermont county highway improvements including two underpasses total about 1 million dollars with Federal participation, per John J. Hayden. Plans cover Ohio U S Route No 52 in Clermont from Bear Creek bridge to Brown County line 5.75 miles with a five month completion target. Also underpass on State Route 74 in Batavia to remove a grade crossing at Norfolk and Western Railway. Estimated costs 375k for Route 52 203k for Batavia underpass. A April 15 deadline for Wooster Pike Ohio U S Route 50 plans in Hamilton to Clermont line with Milford underpass, 470k, plus 185k for underpass. Bids expected after April 15.
The Batavia Woman's Club will meet at Mrs. AB Nichols's home on Thursday February 15 for a program titled Responses Famous Quotations. Speakers include Chas A Lindberg, Jessica Dragonette, Edna St Vincent Millay and Fritz Kreisler among others, five minutes per presentation.
Batavia Lodge No. 104 held a temple meeting to honor Attorney Edwin C. Ely for 27 years as secretary, 49 years a Mason, and 4 years master. A desk set was presented by Eli H. Speidel. Fifty nine members attended as Homer C. Wilson presided and refreshments followed.
Amelia high school teams defeated Owensville last Wednesday with girls 88 to 24 and boys 24 to 5. Friday at Felicity Amelia and Felicity city teams split wins with Amelia girls finishing unbeaten 30 to 10 and Amelia boys 18 to 16.
Sheriff Auxier was in a Sunday 4 a m collision near Glen Este when he dozed and his car left the road into a culvert. Help arrived and he was released. Deputy Brooks ferried him home while Charles McGuire towed the wreck to his garage for repairs.

Winners include Douglas Taylor and Betty Lou Reed in poster contest, John Manney and Cecil Glaney in exhibits, Walter Johnson in fruits and vegetables, Edna Baird in canned goods, and Cecil Glancy notable in multiple categories. Officers elected: President J A Ashton, Vice President Mrs Henry Cobb, Treasurer Co Storkton, Hostess Mrs W G Daugherty.
Clermont County Scout Commissioners and Committeemen plan their regular monthly meeting in Batavia on Friday February 17. Delegations from all villages are urged to attend as this marks Scout Commissioner J L Hubbard's final official visit before his promotion to the Alabama council with headquarters in Florence Alabama.
Batavia P T A meets Thursday at 7 30 PM for its regular monthly session at the school house to mark the founding of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. Mrs Wm Moore delivers the address on Patriotism with Rev W P Martin speaking and Miss Gladys Lewis leading the program.
The Batavia Garden Club gathers with Mrs. Forrest Ely on Monday February 20. Program features responses from a favorite garden magazine Current Magazine Reviews listing House and Garden and Flower Garden with Mrs. Hughey and Mrs. Jas Walker. A flower identification contest led by Mrs. Buerkle and an arrangement titled Forced Shrubs rounds out the agenda.
The Mt Carmel Parent Teacher Association will hold Founders Day at 7 30 PM in the schoolhouse. Mrs Wm Moore president of the Clermont County Council will address on The Vision of the Founders. Mrs Reuben Shor will review the ten year Mt Carmel history. Music by several members and a luncheon committee will serve refreshments.
Ohio State University graduates and former students in Southern Ohio plan a Batavia gathering on February 28. Dinner at 7 PM followed by an 8 PM program at the High School Auditorium features speaker Jack Fullen OSU secretary and coach Francis Schmidt. Reservations should be sent to Francis H. Deter in Batavia.
Bethel Superintendent H J Badgley announces an upcoming display of 150 reproductions of recognized master works for Bethel students and the public. A small admission will be charged to raise funds for purchasing pictures for Bethel Schools. The exact date and venue will be announced soon.
Francis Deter principal of Batavia High School is named a Regional Associate of the Ohio State University Development Fund in Clermont County. Harry R. Drackett announces the first annual campaign to finance university refinements and unmet needs. Regional Associates will act as ambassadors and help organize alumni groups for the drive. Governor Bricker and other leaders plan a national committee meeting on February 17 and 18 at the Ohio State campus.
Bethel Grange presented a traveling jar of seeds to Miami Grange on Tuesday night February 7 and Miami Grange responded with a fine program. Visitors from other Granges attended. A party is set for Thursday night February 16. The Worthy Lecturer announced a moving picture show after the February 21 meeting with Loyd Harlow of Bethel presenting and an educational feature on the Ford V-8.
The Cincinnati Bible Seminary students present a musical program at Monterey Christian Church on Friday evening February 17 1989 at 745 oclock. Everybody welcome.
The Clermont County Ministerial Association met Monday at 10 30 A M in Batavia Methodist Church. Devotions were led by the host pastor Rev C R Spangler. The main address was delivered by Rev A L Althaus pastor of the Christian Church in Bethel.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture announces a redistricting reducing from twelve to eight food and dairy inspection districts. New southwestern districts include Darke Preble Butler Hamilton Shelby Miami Montgomery Warren Clermont. other districts list counties such as C. S. Feeley Dayton Logan Champaign Clark Greene Clinton Brown Union Madison Fayette Highland Adams. J. E. Hathorn of Continental named for remaining areas.
Rev. H. H. Abels will address the Laurel Farmers Institute on February 17. The talk titled Inside The Law draws on his police experience in an eastern city. He is credited as the youngest police chief in the United States.

Two one story frame buildings on Market Street in Felicity owned by Bruce Daughters and Albert Watson were burned out early Saturday. Daughters says his building housing a cream station was unused for a week and suffered about 800 dollars in losses. Watson’s building, also a cream station, was saved in part by prompt action and contained losses not yet estimated. Bethel Fire Department under Chief Sam Leonard assisted local crews to prevent spread to nearby businesses.
M S Eubanks 66 was arrested at his Shawnee Run and Camargo residence after officers watched the home for hours. He faced two warrants for December 3 1937 check with insufficient funds and August 4 1937 embezzlement of 150 dollars. Arraigned and held on bond as officials link him to further manipulations in Versailles Franklin Tad and Adams counties. Sheriff Auxier two Indian Hill Rangers and Lt Ralph Anderson made the arrest.
The Clermont County Council of Religious Education starts the county youth council to unify and aid youth groups across 41 denominations. Members chosen by each church meet quarterly with an 80 year age cap for officers. A drama festival at Cranston Memorial Church on February 15 promotes drama in worship. Martha Ann Fuhr chairs the initiative.
Bethel tops Batavia 31 24 in the boys game while Batavia sweeps the girls 18 11. Rollin Norris led Bethel with 21 points in the Friday basketball card.
