Batavia Marine Dies In Vietnam

First Lt. Andrew M. Haglage 25 died February 4 in a helicopter crash near Da Nang while on a Marine Medivac mission. He was the eldest of ten Haglage children and accompanied home by his brother Lt. Danny Haglage 23. Their father Wally Haglage is a Batavia councilman.

Schwartz Named Clermont County Judge

Schwartz named to Clermont County Common Pleas Court to fill the Osborne vacancy. He will resign his Batavia law practice this week and be sworn in Friday, serving until the November 1970 election. A St Patrick High School graduate, he earned a Kentucky BA and UC law degree and previously served as County Court Judge and assistant prosecuting attorney. He resides in Neville.

Goshen Grid Star Signs With Cincinnati

Ken Voshell of Goshen High School signs a football letter of intent with the University of Cincinnati. A multi sport athlete and National Honor Society member, Voshell earned Clermont County All-Star honors, captained three varsity teams, and set a one-game school record with seven passing touchdowns and four interceptions.

Rhodes Favors Air Tech Institute Funding in Clermont County

State Rep. Massey reports Governor Rhodes recommends 2.5 million for a technical education program and 4.44 million for a 10-year vocational plan in Clermont County. Priority is Appalachian Highway from Clermont to Belpre by 1972 with possible federal reimbursement later. Legislation needed to implement the plan.

Clermont County Auto Fatalities Reach Eight in 1969

Clermont County records show eight traffic deaths in 1969 after a week with five fatalities. Victims include James W. Rivers 31 of Cincinnati killed on SR 32 near Summerside and Fred B. Bimel 18 of Cincinnati who died after a guardrail crash on U.S. 52 near New Richmond. The tragic week also features a heart transplant case linking seven year old Michael Becker of Loveland who died after a crash to the transplant given to six year old Christine Corhn at Children’s Hospital. The county Republican Club meets February 13 at First Milford Savings Association.

22 Defendants Arraigned in Clermont County Court

Arraignment set for today at 10 a.m. before Judge Harold D. Nichols in Common Pleas Court for 22 defendants named in indictments. Indictments include first degree manslaughter, burglary, larceny, breaking and entering, assault, rape, non support, and other charges. Prosecutor Robert A. Jones presented the cases.

East Fork Land Purchase Near Halfway Mark

About half the land for the East Fork Reservoir in Clermont County has been bought with 2960 acres of 6000 needed totaling 1,131,000 dollars. Caesar Creek Reservoir land totals 11,600 acres needed with 2078 acres acquired. State must handle purchases after attorney general ruled federal acquisition illegal. Governor Rhodes said ground would be broken for East Fork this spring.

Airport Problem Remains. Meeting Set For Feb 20

The county airport delay persists as officials schedule a 9 a.m. February 20 session in the commissioners' office. Chairman Arthur Blake expects a final agreement, amid disputes between Clermont Airways and Clermont Industrial Parks over airport buildings and land lease arrangements.

County Plans To Equalize Water Rates Across Users

Clermont County Commissioners consider adopting a single rate for all water users to close the gap between minimums. Currently residents pay a flat minimum plus reduced usage pricing, while multiunit buildings are charged as single users with varying unit counts. Approval from bondholders will be needed. Also, they endorsed final plans for a $3,610 sewer project for Amelia Village and parts of Batavia Township by McGill & Smith of Amelia.

Mike Becker Memorial Fund Started by Classmates

Seven year old Mike Becker died February 8 after injuries from a Mulberry auto crash. His classmates formed the Mike Becker Memorial Fund at Miami Elementary School Milford Ohio to support Children's Hospital heart research. Funeral services were held at Loveland Presbyterian Church with burial in Rest Haven. He is survived by his parents a sister Melinda and grandparents.

Batavia High Wins Its Academic Quiz Championship

Batavia High School's team won the regular competition with 265 points on Sunday February 9 and earned a playoff berth on The It's Academic program. They defeated Princeton High School and Covington Latin School to claim a 20 volume Merit Students Encyclopedia for Batavia Library. runners up each received 17 volume Literary Heritage sets and team members got personalized briefcases. The program airs Saturdays and Sundays on WCPO TV from 5 30 to 6 p.m.

Mrs Paul Injured In Tuesday Accident

Mrs John Bobbie Paul aged 42 of Day Heights was injured in a Tuesday crash on Highway 131 at 12 45 PM. She was taken to Mercy Hospital in serious condition after her eastbound car left the road struck a mailbox crossed the road and smashed into a ditch and guard posts then struck trees in a described 60 ft leap and 40 ft travel. Washington's birthday holiday closing noted with court offices to be closed Feb 21 22 following Lincoln's day closure.
