Clermont county closed 1943 with a stronger balance. January started at $110,855.29 and December ended at $138,894.83, with receipts totaling $807,243.71 and expenditures $779,204.17. Major income came from general property tax, $461,261.40, while road and county expenses shaped the year’s fiscal picture.
Battavia schools shut for a day after janitor James Whitney, a licensed fireman, died suddenly leaving no one to operate the heating. Robert Jones left to attend his sister’s death in Cleveland. Schools resumed Tuesday with hand-stoked furnace. a new fireman to be hired soon.
Benney T. Morton is detained by Clermont authorities on theft charges over a Fordson tractor. Morton, linked to property formerly owned by John W. Shafer on Boss Road, claims ownership with a receipt. Shafer alleges Morton took the tractor during a move, while Morton asserts the tractor belongs to him.
The Batavia Junior Woman's club hosted a Time Magazine contest winner Miss Eloise Gompf at a meeting. A joint committee of Grange Farm Bureau and Livestock producers met with County Auditor Blythe Jones and Woodward Appraisal to outline the county tax re appraisal. A Navy recruiter visited Clermont county last week talking to high school leaders about the V-5 pilot officer training plan. The program accepts 17 to 26 year olds with 23 months of combined college and flight training, ending in naval reserve ensign or Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant commissions.

James Whitney, a licensed fireman at Batavia school, died suddenly Sunday night at his sister Mrs. Howard Henderson’s home in Batavia. He was 52 and also survived by another sister Mrs. George Perry of Greenberry. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:00 PM from Moore Funeral Home.
Sgt. Frank R. Summers of Miami ville Ohio receives promotion to Staff Sergeant after two years in the Army and near a year in the North African war area. He is awarded the Good Conduct Medal. His wife Ornella Manning Summers, a Batavia Public Schools teacher, lives at Williamsburg Ohio.
A vandalism incident at the Farm Bureau Co-Operative office in Batavia led to theft of $63 in sales tax stamps and scattered furnishings. Sheriff Brooks investigated. stamps lost, ascribed to youths. Also reported are funeral services for Mrs Adrienne S Newman of Milford and legal rulings upholding Clermont judges in cases heard by Judge White and Judge Halbisch.
The annual War Fund campaign for the American Red Cross will run in March with a national goal of 200 million dollars. Clermont county’s quota is 27700 dollars, about 10000 higher than last year, reflecting expanded Red Cross service for military personnel. Blythe Jones of Milford is reappointed campaign manager and township chairmen will be named with local quotas set.
Batavia council examines petitions seeking discontinuance of parallel parking. Business interests argue the change reduces curb space on Main Street, forcing shoppers to side streets and causing inconvenience.
