Batavia edged the Cincinnati Wildcats 26 to 25 in a hard fought high school basketball game. The hometown squad led 15 to 20 at halftime, but Batavia tightened defense in the second half to prevail by a single point.
Kentucky passes a law barring political emblems from November ballots. Voters who rely on emblems to identify ballots face hardship. If Ohio mirrors the move, similar difficulties would occur for hundreds who depend on emblems to choose their ballots.
Holmstead Dairy Queen in Columbus produced 12,797 pounds of milk at 6.15 percent, yielding 787 pounds of butter fat over 188 living days, earning an A J Club gold medal. The cow also set a 1920 record of 8,497 pounds milk at 6.40 percent, yielding 644 pounds fat.
Airborne report notes Elklick bills raid locating aull and seizing moist goods with several arrests. Texas raid by state forces yields 50 arrests and seven stills, plus mash destruction. Brown County Commissioners discuss final disposal of the County Childrens Home. The institution will be abandoned at month’s end and State workers say the child welfare division will take charge of remaining wards. Plans include housing placements in Adams County and extending the mother’s pension fund to support home environments.
The East Fork Progressive Farm Woman's Club met at Elizabeth Harlow's home on January 28 with guests Louella Burdsall of Owensville and Julia Hamilton of Greenberry. Officers were elected at another meeting of Country Club on January 26 and programs emphasized club benefit and new year plans. The report also notes Judge Young's five year record with the Court of Appeals upholding his decisions on liquor law cases and second offenses under the Crabbe Act.
Ohio bootleggers face prison for selling or manufacturing liquor with poison. Two Cleveland lawyers found an old law prescribing one to five years on conviction. Dry supporters say harsher penalties will fill Ohio prisons, ending fines as sole punishment.
Last Sunday at the Batavia hotel Mrs. Gelvin discovered a fire in an upstairs closet as children Sue Speidel and Lelia May Henderson played and lit a candle. The flame caught a curtain and spread to a skirt and blanket but was extinguished by Mrs. Gelven. The children escaped unhurt and boarders resumed dinner.
County surveyor published load limits for pikes with penalties. Despite some arrests for overloads in soft weather, many drivers comply. A Ripley truck weighed at Williamsburg stayed within limit, but overloads cost taxpayers. Drivers urge road preservation and suggest lighter loads with more trips.
Batavia tobacco market reports February sales with prices for nonscraps common smokers tips trashes short reds lugs red leaf bright leaf and overall totals. February 1 sale shows 64 615 pounds offered at 26.65 average. February 3 offerings 68 700 with 4705 rejections at 28.69. Monday sale totals 20 640 pounds at 24.65 average.
One of the finest dances of the season will be held next Friday night February 10 at the Batavia Armory. The Batavia Loose Leaf Tobacco Warehouse employees host with Scott's Jazz Friends providing music. Refreshments served. Admission 1.60 dollars, unescorted ladies 26 cents.
Rev E G Klotz of the Ohio Federation of Churches spoke at U B M E and Presbyterian churches about two thirds of the world not reached by church and over 60 percent of Ohio unaffiliated. He outlined rural survey findings and said forty percent of the state’s population are church members.

Civil War veteran G W Slade died at his home in Williamsburg on Monday morning February 6 at 9 o'clock. Funeral service was held at his home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock with burial at Old Bethel. He was well known in Elklick where he had resided for many years.

State Game Warden orders that fox hunting and fox drives have expired and that prosecution will follow any killings. The law allows a property owner to protect poultry and young lambs from fox damage.
The Clermont area paper highlights active auto and tractor dealers using advertising to attract customers. Farmers’ Week at Ohio State University features terracing by W. J. Burger of Williamsburg to control erosion and a new approach to farm finance via an Ohio Farm Bureau Federation initiative for an agricultural finance corporation to supplement banks. Clyde F. A Monday start in Batavia sees a kindergarten group of 5 to 6 year olds under Miss Koehler. Normal students will teach the class for one hour daily. Auditor of State issued April disbursements to county boards of education for weak school districts. Total 14125.57 with numerous allocations to schools and townships including Batavia, New Richmond, Williamsburg, Mt. Carmel, Felicity Franklin and others. more payments expected around April 15 after final county settlement.
Three drives in the Fayetteville territory last week gathered a large turnout with hundreds participating. Eleven foxes were captured and several escaped before sale. Proceeds from the sales were donated to charitable causes.
J. E B Huheey of Willowville will sell his farm near Batavia four miles west on Cincinnati pike around February 21 after selling to John L Stettinius.
