Governor Davis plans to retire at term end unless state government reforms jeopardize Ohio’s gains. He renounces current federal ambitions and pledges to honor public promises. His final decision in sixty days hinges on the stability of administrative improvements and the public good.
The Chicago City Civil Service Commission released results for the Chief Clerk exam in municipal departments. Samuel F. Manning, formerly of Bethel and long time office secretary at the Health Department, leads the list. The temporary incumbent earns $4000 annually. Harry Halbsch, Batavia native, also works in the Health Department as a Food Inspector.
R. R. Walker agricultural agent for the Missouri Kansas and Texas railroad leaves for Washington to attend an agricultural conference called by Secretary Wallace. He will represent the Southwestern Railway Development Association. The conference aims to shape ideas toward a national agricultural policy, though a fixed policy is deemed unlikely. Walker is son of F W Walker of Williamsburg.
Loveland school children present pageants directed by teachers under the Mother's Club supervision. The event aims to promote good health and will unfold Friday evening February 8 at the opera house Admiralty 10 gents.
Ralph Jones owner of a Batavia pool room entered his business on a ram page and fired at bulbs and the floor. Dick Fite, a helper at Citizens' Garage, struck him with a cue, breaking Jones jaw and wounding him, as Jones also had earlier incidents including a goat display and past injuries.
Batavia tobacco market notes three sales in a week with no rejections on January 25 and Friday. Nonscripte ranges, common smoker and bright leaf prices listed. offerings totals 45 270 and 52 155 with rejections 2 530. Monday weather affected handling, all grades sold fairly well, totals 82 670 and average 28 18.
The Y P D Council calls for all Sunday school classes to send census reports and urges every boy girl man and woman to observe Prayer Week from February 1 to 8 with daily prayer for Y P D and Sunday school work and to hold church prayer services where possible.
Clermont county will contribute 10000 toward a new bridge over the Little Miami River at Symmes on Hopewell road. The estimated cost is 69000, with bids expected lower. Hamilton and Clermont counties met to finalize funding, Clermont agreeing to cover the full Clermont share to secure low bids.

The Grant Centenary Coinage bill, after Senate and House amendments, was signed by the President on Saturday January 28. It authorizes minting ten thousand gold one dollar pieces and two hundred fifty thousand silver half dollar pieces to honor General Ulysses S Grant. Proceeds fund a road from New Richmond to Point Pleasant and a Grant Memorial in Georgetown and Bethel.
D O Kennard of the Ohio Experiment Station Wooster has designed a special feeder and water stand to boost water and dry mash intake by laying fowls. Plans are mailed free to any Ohio resident. Rev Steele leads a long meeting begun last Friday night. Mrs Glance wins a weekend nest for her sister Mrs Neva Ogden of Orwood. Ogden visits with her and returns home with them. Farmers near Felicity received assurances from Warehouse Chairman Fitzgerald and Rep Oscar Ellis that a cooperative receiving warehouse will be built near the railroad this summer to aid tobacco growers who currently haul crops long distances. Ben Wilson of Ten Mile was arrested in Marietta and jailed awaiting grand jury action after an automobile theft tied to the case. Clark Waesner brought him in.
In Highland county last week an odd disclosure emerged over soldiers' bonus application blanks. Lloyd B. Miguery of Morrowtown was to receive his form as his father forwarded it to Freetown Africa, where Lloyd and his mother serve as United Brethren missionaries.
The death of Henry Harris occurred Saturday morning after a period of rheumatic distress. He was noted for simple living, generosity to the homeless and animals, and service in the Spanish American War. He leaves a wife, family, and grandchildren. funeral was Monday at 10 am from the residence and burial followed at Mt. Oreb Cemetery.
Four foxes were captured in the Wayne township drive held Monday. Weakness in the south line allowed four additional animals to escape. In recent drives in that community, 15 foxes have been slaughtered, 12 of them females, according to the Wilmington Democrat.
Non-pooled tobacco from this and adjacent counties is being placed on loose leaf markets in Batavia and Mayeville with strong prices. Several Adams county dealers are active on the Batavia market.
Frank Martin of Batavia township was arrested last week for possessing a still and liquor. Mayor Ross fined him 500 dollars plus costs on Monday and suspended a 1000 dollar penalty for liquor trafficking if caught in the act again.
Spectators gathered as 12 000 gallons of whisky and seven barrels of wine were poured into Union Hill gutters. The liquor had been seized last year at Jersey City Hoboken and Union Hill by United States Marshals.
A free projection at the town hall last Friday night showcased State game preserves with clear pictures on game and fish. Attendance was lower than expected, but the presentation effectively conveyed the benefits of protecting wildlife and the results anticipated.

Mrs Elizabeth Gardner nee Eppert dies after short illness at her daughter Mrs Carthena Butler's home in Bantam aged 87. Widow of George W Gardner she lived in Mt Holly long and had four daughters and two sons surviving. Funeral by Rev N Fisher at Mt Moriah with burial there.
Clermont County growers begin delivering Burley tobacco to the Bethel Warehouse Company a subsidiary of C G P Ry. The Felicity area plans a new warehouse to handle local crop and a Dairy Feeding School will be held in Batavis with Ivan McKellip as instructor. Clyde F. Tom urges farm account records for helpful comparisons.
The ridge on the road from the Williamsburg pike to the Deerfield pike near the Curtis home is completed and opened for travel after several weeks closed. Citizens in the area express pleasure as the route serves heavy traffic.
The great distillery at Lynchburg owned by Feiburg and Workum of Cincinnati is sold to Thomas E. Darlington of Louisville Kentucky. Valued at $500000 the plant will be used to manufacture whiskey for medicinal purposes. About 7500 barrels are in storage.
The first county seal sale for public health left a balance after campaign expenses. Twenty percent, $888.25, was sent to the State Association to support Clermont county health work. Bata via led with $100.64 in sales, Loveland had $96, Milford with $0.44.
