No Cooperation From Weather Hinders Elk Lick Lion Hunt

Clermont County game warden Edgar Anstaett waits for a new report on a mountain lion sighting in Elk Lick. Mrs. Musgrove reported a gray brown animal the size of a calf near Twin Bridge. A posse of about 20 prepared to hunt, but fresh snow hindered tracking and hunting plans.

Deputies Appointed for Dog Census in Batavia and Union Townships

Clermont County Commissioners appoint Joe Anderson and Ben Gresham as deputy dog wardens to census dog owners in Batavia and Union Townships. Anderson will be paid 10 dollars daily. Dogs found off owners premises must be turned over to the warden. Rental of the Veteran Housing Unit at Hamlet approved for Eunice Reese. County Engineer tasked to estimate repairs on two Round Bottom Road bridges in Union and Miami Townships.

Batavia Schools Close Wednesday Amid Snow

Heavy snowfall forced Batavia schools to close again on Wednesday after two days of operation. Roads used by buses were impassable, prompting a full week of closures per Supt. Paul Hopping. Fuel shortages were not the cause of the suspension.

One Man Broom Shop Emerges in Clermont County

Theodore Davis, a blind craftsman, operates a home broom shop in Mt. Carmel Clermont County. He learned the trade at the Kentucky School for the Blind and refined his method in Columbus Ohio with State Services for the Blind. Davis buys broom corn in 320 pound bales from Oklahoma Texas and Colorado and plans local sales with possible shipments to the state for resale.

Scout Finance Campaign To Be Launched Feb 8

At Terrace Park Country Club Harold Nichols of Nichols Speidel & Nichols was named campaign manager for the 1948 Boy Scout Finance Drive. The goal is 3600 to fund operation, improvement, and sustained district Scouting in Clermont County. Local area chairmen will be appointed next week.

Mrs. Charles Abbott announces the March of Dimes drive in Clermont County will run until February 15. Residents who have not donated can contact the local March of Dimes Headquarters in Loveland, Ohio for contributions.

Batavia Village Council Adopts Zoning and Building Code

Batavia Village Council approved a new building code and zoning ordinance at a Tuesday meeting. The code requires permits for any construction or remodeling over 25 dollars and standardizes future work. A zoning board will be appointed from council leadership and four village area representatives.

New Richmond Coal Situation Relieved By Digger Unloading

Ice in the Ohio River caused hardship at New Richmond as residents lacked coal. A digger was set up recently and unloading began from a river barge bound for Nobis, easing the supply strain.

Rotary meet to feature Harvey Hudson as principal speaker

Harvey Hudson, cashier of Clinton County National Bank, will be principal speaker at next week's Batavia Rotary Club meeting. Special guests include Batavia Senior Woman's Club members and Rotary wives. Mayor Verne Stock of Loveland visited Christ Hospital Cincinnati for spinal surgery and had been ill at home for weeks.

Batavia Churches Plan Two-Week Revival Starting Feb 15

Three Batavia churches join for a two week revival beginning February 15 with services at 7:30 p.m. at Batavia Methodist Church. Represented are Batavia Presbyterian and Batavia Evangelical United Brethren Churches. Dr Innis D Harris of Windfield Kansas will deliver sermons and Mr Woodward L Poole of Columbus Georgia will conduct song services. Both men come to Batavia highly recommended for their church work.

Clermont County Independent Tournament Opens at Amelia

The 1948 Clermont County Independent Basketball Tournament begins February 9 at Amelia School Gymnasium with two games nightly at 8 pm. Opening lineup lists New Richmond vs Mt. Carmel and other matchups as teams vie for the title through February 17.

Couple Denies Treating Boy in Bethel Hearing

At a hearing before Mayor Luther Cantor in Bethel Monday night, Carl Liggett and his wife entered a not guilty plea to charges of mistreating a six year old boy. They were bound over to the grand jury on bonds of 500 dollars each. The case was brought by Ruth Dalheimer, formerly Liggett’s wife, after her son Larry appeared at Bethel High School with bruises. The boy was examined by Bethel nurse Virginia Faulkner and Dr. A. A. Gruber. he had been staying with the Liggetts.

Christmas Seal Returns Still Being Received

The Clermont County Tuberculosis and Health Association thanks supporters of the 1947 Christmas Seal Sale. Although the sale closed on Dec 25 1947 there is still time to reply to unanswered letters to protect personal and community health. The 1948 tuberculosis control program is now under way funded by 1947 proceeds.

The Batavia area ranks among 12 communities with top priority for new hospital facilities as part of a Federal Hospital Construction Act effort. Hospitals of at least fifty beds are considered, serving the general area. Georgetown and Hillsboro share first priority, with Clermont County under survey for need. Local match is two dollars per federal dollar, else priority moves elsewhere.
