Phone Company Proposes Batavia Newtonsville Area Service

The Batavia and Newtonsville exchanges would gain improved service after Ohio Public Utilities Commission approval. Surveying customers will determine interest and location based charges from 5.90 to 9.40 dollars, with business lines at 19.50 to 24.00. Existing service remains available at current rates.

Harsha Seeks Funds to Advance Paint Creek Reservoir

Rep. William H. Harsha criticizes President Johnson for omitting the Paint Creek Reservoir from the 1966 budget while noting that Deer Creek and Big Darby projects are under way. The Batavia Local Board of Education approved contracts for the new high school project. General contractor Joe Zobay 377270, plumbing Stark Plumbing 43446, heating Geiler Plumbing 73874, electrical Becker Electric 41744, kitchen Mastercraft Metals 15019, totaling 551343. Board authorized bond money investment at Clermont National Bank. Groundbreaking set for Ely Ave site on Sunday Jan 31 at 3 pm and Feb 10 at 7 30 pm in the high school library.

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce estimates Clermont County would pay about 27.37 million dollars under President Johnson’s proposed 1965 66 federal budget. Ohio’s national share stands at roughly 5.49 percent, with the state’s total impact pegged at about 5.47 billion dollars.

Clermont County Recorder William Shebesta reports January 1964 mortgage volume rose in count but fell in value from a year earlier. January 1964 saw 001 mortgages totaling $2,277,331, versus 158 mortgages for $1,803,582 last month. Deeds rose 215 to 206. financing statements dropped to 258 from 363. fees collected were $2127 versus $3,114 in January 1964. Ground breaking held for Batavia high school project

An enthusiastic crowd gathered January 31 on Bauer Ave to kick off the Batavia high school project with a ground breaking ceremony led by principal Harris Wright. Speakers included Harry Moore, Kenneth Jones, and Joe Zobay. Louis Wolf turned the first shovel as the board pledged prompt construction when weather allows.

Carter Takes Seat on Bethel Council

Bethel welcomes Stanley Carter to the council succeeding Jack Florida who resigned. Carter is named chair of finance and Grant Memorial Building committees and serves on safety and old cemetery committees. Council approves a $5400 ambulance purchase for Bethel Safety Unit and trades in the old vehicle.

Clermont County Health Board endorses meat inspection program

Slaughterhouse operators and veterinarians praised a year of health department meat inspection. Dr. Albert Van Sickle reported the program works with veterinarians inspecting abattoirs. fees paid by the vets. The board heard 27 community leaders are invited to a May 4–6 health conference at Lake Hope, with state covering expenses. The board approved new plumbing contractor permit rules and adopted updated insurance coverage for department contents. Meetings will continue on the first Thursday of each month, next Feb 4 at 7 30 p.m.

Milford Woman Named To Public Library Board

The Clermont County Public Library board welcomed Milford resident Mrs James Brown as a new member at the January organizational meeting succeeding long serving member Mrs O L McBride. J W Evans was elected president for a second year. The system operates Batavia Union Township and Milford branches with three bookmobiles serving rural areas and reports 1964 circulation and collection growth.

Action Group Formed To Coordinate Local Federal Aid

Clermont County commissioners create a Community Action Committee to implement the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act locally. Members include Welfare Director Wayne Oney Mrs Ida Kennard an officer of the county health and welfare committee Robert K Slade from the county education office and Dr Phillips F Greene president of the Tuberculosis and Health Association.

Lebanon and USA compared in youth courtship and freedoms

Hafiz Yousuf from Lebanon spoke at Batavia High School on January 27 comparing Lebanese and American culture. He noted differences in courtship, parental involvement, and freedom of choice, while stressing responsibility. He shared his background including degrees from Georgetown Kentucky and University of Cincinnati, and his past as a Southern Baptist missionary. The event was sponsored by Y-Teens with Miss Sue Hamilton introducing the program.

Uncle and nephews held in bowling lanes break-in

Police linked the men to a burglary at multiple sites including Williamsville Supply Co and Dial's Service Station near Owensville. About 765 dollars in cash and 96 dollars in whiskey were stolen, with some cash recovered. The oldest Hughes brother had prior sentences for breakings and entries.
