A Batavian four year old was reported missing from Beaver Terrace Friday noon. At midnight he was found asleep in bed with the Miller boys at Carter's Corner eight miles away. The reunion sparked joyous relief among Beavers and neighbors.
J R Shaw trustee for Hartman Brothers creditors offers for sale the entire stock of goods at Marathon Ohio. Sale starts Tuesday February 10 at 1 pm and continues daily until sold. Conducted by court order without reserve to highest bidder. Terms cash on $0.00 and under, six months credit with approved security for amounts over.
Levi M Perkins brother of W W Perkins and a well known Batavia citizen died in Cincinnati January 80 in his 76th year. Born December 10 1814 in Bracken County Kentucky he leaves six children and many friends. His remains were laid to rest at Union Cemetery Batavia with many locals paying respects.
Henry Benizer of New Palestine swore out a warrant in Cincinnati on Thursday to arrest James Hall for allegedly defrauding him in a horse trade. Benizer brought a pair of mules to the Fifth Street horse market and agreed to exchange for a horse if Hall could be found. While the animals were being examined Hall fled with the mules, Hall later contends the trade was fair and Benizer overreacted.
Louis Maher, after months as Batavia station agent, is transferred to the O and N W main office in Cincinnati. E W Buvinger assumes charge here, having previously been stationed at Batavia. Maher leaves with widespread regard. Buvinger is regarded as popular and efficient.
The Standard Oil Company buys land at Milford and will build large storage vats for oil and gasoline. Milford will become a distributing point for Clermont and Warren counties. John B. Whitewill is resident manager. The industry is expected to attract eight or ten new families and bring weekly revenue to the town.
Unclaimed letters listed for week ending January 29 1890 at Batavia include Noah Nunemaker R L Perry J Remlin BE B Scott and P M. Local officials plan a special session to arrange safe keeping of prisoners during jail construction with Maher backing cells in the old law offices adjoining the courthouse while others argue seven prisoners could be kept in Cincinnati for safety and economy. Wm. A. Canter and daughter Nettle faced Squire Altman after Mayor Solomon accused them of selling butter that was really a thin coat over thick pickled pork. Canter denied the charge while Miss Canter confessed to planning the swindle and was fined ten dollars plus costs.
A volley of notes from multiple papers highlights Portsmouth plans for larger O N W shop quarters, rail connections, and shop implications. Local editorials urge expansion, while other items tease telegraph lines and civic needs amid a bustling regional news scene.
The Clermont County Agricultural Society met in Batavia to elect officers for the year and revise the premium list for the Owensville fair in August. R. D. Sapp was chosen president. D. W. Atchley vice president. John Rowan secretary. C. Boardwell treasurer. Executive and department committees were appointed, with reports due from the auditing committee.
The Moscow flouring mill is incorporated as a joint stock company by prominent local business men S. H. Grimes D. J. Moreton M. G. Rouse F. C. DeBruler and J. W. Rouse. The mill thrives and enjoys a top reputation in southern Ohio under highly praised management by miller W. E H Montgomery.
Commissioners sold the old Batavia jail and attached outbuildings and neighboring law offices. Purchasers paid varied sums for materials and structures. The report notes new residents and meetings, plus notices of upcoming events and a Mellin's Food advertisement.
Spider Robinson sustains head wound and back injuries from a scuffle with his family cat. The large feline delivered a deep gash as it dashed past him, leaving both parties bloodied. A doctor called the incident a near miss. Mr. Robinson quips he escaped by a scratch.
Court records list ongoing and upcoming cases including State versus multiple defendants for assaults burglary and liquor sale to a minor with bonds set at 400 and trials scheduled through February and March. The Norfolk and Western Railway, nearing control of the Ohio and Northwestern, asks Ironton officials to vacate Spruce Pine and Ellison streets from First to the alley between First and Second. They have spent about $65,000 on Ironton real estate and seek about $30,000 more for a depot and grounds. A proposed $20,000 station house will include a handsome building with covered tracks and landscaped surroundings.
Superintendent N H Chaney of Washington D C will give a lecture titled Measured by Gold or the Money Value of Education before county teachers in Batavia on February 28. The program promises practical moral and educational insights and high attendance is anticipated.
The annual Williamsburg Farmers Institute will meet February 1 and 12 in the town hall. The State Board of Agriculture will send three speakers to lecture on practical farming subjects. A Saturday night blaze gutted the New Boston council chamber and prison between eleven and twelve, destroying the small frame building and all town records. Authorities suspect an incendiary aimed at erasing records.
A destructive blaze in Winchester on Tuesday morning gutted a major portion of the business district. The damage is estimated at 12000 with half insured in Royal Liverpool Phoenix Hartford and Ohio fire companies. Supposed cause is incendiarism.
Capt Henry Green attended a Naval Veteran Association meeting in Cincinnati last week. The Presbyterian church ladies held their second anniversary Tea at Mrs Hannah Day’s residence with about sixty guests and $11.20 raised. A Demorest contest at Opera Hall yielded Aldine Powers the medal amid nine contestants. Several ministers preached in local churches and meetings were held in Kentucky. The town reports a burglary crackdown with three thieves arrested and one fined. Local residents visit relatives in Kentucky and Ohio and several move to Cincinnati or Texas.
