Mrs. Bepa Lucas died near Corley Arkansas after a long life aged 123 years. She left a son over eighty. Her father was Cherokee and her mother white. Born in Alamance County North Carolina. A Corley man recalls she claimed to be eighty five years old forty years ago. She chewed and smoked tobacco and drank whisky when offered.

DETROIT January 28 Kate Conner an employee at Gray Buffy furniture factory fell through the elevator shaft from the fifth floor and was instantly killed. Avacosta Ga January 29 Mrs Elizabeth White of Jackson County Ga the bride of a wife of matrimony committed suicide by hanging.
Mine No 255 owned by a syndicate and operated by Seth Robinson caught fire in New Straitsville. The blaze spread through an air course fifty feet above ground, destroying seventy back-cars and causing the roof to cave as pillars burned out. Strikers suspected planned operation change amid the strike.
Cincinnati report details four young men Peter and George Gerber Joseph Paul and Mike Slang who hired a sleigh and drank heavily in Cumminsville. One man Peter Gerber died from cold and exposure while the others were found unconscious. The bodies were sent to Habig's morgue and the hospital. Paul and Charles Gerber were later deemed out of danger while Stang remained seriously ill.
London reports Charles Warren Adams, who sued Bernard Coleridge for libel over a letter to Mildred Coleridge, now brings a direct libel action against Lord Coleridge. The case centers on a letter Lord Coleridge wrote to a friend of Adams.
A dynamite accident at Beveridge Bay in Perth Ontario destroyed the engine house. Six cartridges on the floor exploded this morning. Lewis in charge and George McDonald died. Buchanan was severely injured.
In Springfield on January 29, EF. M. Haines of Lake won the permanent Speaker’s chair with 79 votes to 74 for Chas. E. Fuller and 1 for Conkrite. The decisive ballot broke a lengthy stalemate as Fuller supported Haines.
A Locophone device akin to a telephone was tested on the New York and New Haven road. It allows instant, simultaneous communication between each on duty engineer and the Superintendent or Dispatchers while trains run at high speed, with messages delivered to all engineers at once via a rail-based circuit.
Cincinnati on January 29 1890 a dead body was found frozen on the canal ice. John Gilmore of Lockland was arrested for petit larceny but discharged by the grand jury. He left court in cold weather and fell into the canal dying. His mother identified the body today.
A Hungarian man, heavily intoxicated, threw his child on a red hot stove and then assaulted the mother when she tried to intervene. Both mother and child are reported near death. Police are investigating the brutal incident in Penn Haven Junction.
General Wolseley telegrams that Olivier Pain commands the Arab garrison of thirteen thousand at Metemineh. Pain is linked to Mahdi's Paris headquarters and Wolseley suspects he uses Cairo newspaper ties to misinform El Mahdi of British movements.
Lansing January 29 A bill has been introduced into the Legislature securing to women the right to vote at school city town and other municipal elections.
A fast express on the Bound Brook Railroad derailed after a wheel broke near Jersey City. The coaches crashed into a sidelined coal train, wrecking four cars and injuring twenty-one, mostly from Philadelphia. The incident could cost the company about $100,000.
A lamp explosion sparked a three story blaze at Main and Lake in Angola, killing a ten year old, and causing another death. several residents injured as Fred Bangert’s daughter and others suffered fractures while William Thompson died of apoplexy after rushing to help. The Juvenile Templars lodge room was destroyed and nearby structures also burned.
London reports say Home Secretary Harcourt received word of dynamiter threats to the British Museum. Scotland Yard arrests a suspect with an infernal machine at Westminster lodgings. Extra police guard museum and rail termini as threats spread to Holyhead routes and bridges. American tourists warned of disturbances along these routes.
An anthracite stove exploded in the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Goff in Cincinnati injuring her. The blast shattered room windows, tore a door from its hinge and demolished furniture, causing shock and damage.
