Jennie Butler and Jennie Smith were wounded and Joe Muskrat shot in the hand. Baldridge had killed Jesse Foreman years prior and was believed to have been targeted by Foreman’s allies.
The body of fourteen year old Robes was found frozen to death hanging from a tree at Eagle Point, eighteen miles north of Sterling. His mother had whipped him for a misdemeanor, and he told the hired man he would hang himself before going to the barn.
Sister Theresa, niece of James G. Blaine, died at St Marys Catholic Convent Wilkes Barre at four this morning after a prolonged illness contracted during a recent Washington visit. Fathers Comerford and O Haran and many religious associates were at her bedside. The best medical science could not halt the disease.
Mrs Mary A Matthews wife of Justice Stanley Matthews died after months of illness at four this morning. She was surrounded by her husband and family. The remains will be buried at Glendale Ohio.
In Belleville Ontario a man named Barton drunk last night struck his sick daughter with a chair and killed her. The mother fled to a neighbor in the bitter cold and died from exposure and excitement.
A portable engine exploded at Simon Benedict’s Groton farm killing engineer Edwin Phelps and Edward Benedict instantly. Simon Benedict lost a leg and suffered a crushed skull. his son Byron also had a leg blown off and is fatally injured, in Urica New York on January 22.
A wagon bed sled party returning from a suburban dance in Decatur Illinois on January 22 finds William Hallett frozen to death after the thermometer reads 24 degrees below zero. The incident prompts a search for other travelers and a tally of losses from the cold snap.
Two Nickel Plate freight trains collided near Grand Crossing Inr. on January 20. Four locomotives wrecked and one engineer killed. Property loss estimated at $20,000.
Tillie McPherson an eighteen year old daughter of a Baltimore Episcopal minister was found dead in a garret room on the city outskirts. A week old infant body wrapped in rags lay in a leather valise. A note quoted bury these items with me. Tillie had been in East Baltimore society and linked to a past scandal. She left boarding house in November claiming to visit friends in Canada. The house had been rented in October for four dollars per month. rent remained unpaid after January 15.

The will of the late Schuyler Colfax was admitted to probate. Mrs Colfax receives the family residence with contents and half the residue. Schuyler Colfax Jr. gains the remaining half. The estate is valued at $550000 and is without incumbrance.
Ottumwa Iowa January 20 the county grand jury was discharged and ignored charges against five well known citizens arrested for the recent lynching of Pleasant Anderson. The prosecutor asked that the case be referred to another grand jury and the court will likely refer it again. The judge stated he regretted the jury could not return an indictment. The jury also ignored all violations of the preliminary law.
Captain Mike Farrell head of Farrells police and detective agency dies after overdosing on aconite prescribed by druggist William Melchert. Farrell led the Souths largest detective force and helped guard the Exposition front and river traffic. He had recently recruited a 500 man corps for national policing efforts.
A. H. Butts reports extreme cold as a logging camp near Metropolitan Mich endured temperatures to 43 degrees below zero. An old trapper named Tom Dodging was killed and eaten by wolves two miles from camp. His friends found his bones, thirteen wolves shot but with bullets in them, and his rifle nearby.
Liberty Bell taken from Independence Hall at 8 oclock with a 500 police procession to West Philadelphia depot. The bell rides in a specially built car by the Pennsylvania Railroad with three officers guarding it through decorated streets and garlanded truck.
Charleston Illinois January 23 Thomas J Chapman was executed by hanging here today for the murder of his employer Nicholas Hubbard last fall.
In Annapolis on January 23 the daughter of Chief Justice Chase died after her night dress caught fire from an open grate. Fire department and authorities reported the accidental blaze, noting no foul play.
