At midnight a freight train on the C S L T Narrow gauge line ran away from its crew on a high trestle near Court and Broadway. The engine jumped the track and fell thirty feet to the embankment, killing fireman Jack Squires and likely fatally injuring engineer Jim Flannigan. The engine and four cars were found thirty feet down the embankment.

In Baltimore Missouri on February 4 reports detail the deadly siege of seven Roberts family members on a frozen Susquehanna island opposite Port Deposit. Two rescuers braved shifting ice and swift current to reach them finding a mother and newborn dead, others starving, with food and burial plans arranged as river ice blocks shore access.
A Standing Rock dispatch tells how journalist Stanley Huntley, once with the Dakota Press and famed for the Spoopendike Papers, becomes chief of the Teton Nation through an adopted kinship after aiding Little Knife and healing his wound amid tribal succession. Huntley’s Native name is Waukpay Wankan.
A downtown six story stone and iron building at 110 to 114 Wooster Street burned after midnight on February 5. The roof collapsed at 1 30 a m and walls toppled, threatening Spring Prince Wooster and Greene streets. Des Moines reports that Smith Wilson and Cicero Jefferson, condemned for the murder of Hiram Jefferson, were lynched this morning in Audubon. Smith and Wilson were shot in their cells after a desperate fight, Cicero Jefferson was hanged from the park band stand after confessing to murdering his father.
Washington report says blacksmith William Iliffe of Worcester County Maryland has unexpectedly fallen heir to four million dollars and an English earldom. He cannot read or write. The unusual case draws attention to property and title inheritance complexities across borders.
A Frankfort dispatch reports a state inquiry finds a 15 year system of robbery under color of law in Kentucky. The deficit may total about 2 million dollars with one million from Criminal Prosecutions, 500 thousand from keeping idiots, and possible further crookedness in other expenditures. Daniel Kullman laborer at L I C Company steel mill in Scranton was caught while putting on a belt. He was whirled around the shaft hundreds of times a minute and slammed against beams. His feet and hands were torn off. he died after thirty minutes.
New York reports O'Donovan Rossa resting comfortably with doctors optimistic he may leave hospital within ten days if his condition improves as in the past day or two. He received many visitors this morning.
