The Clermont Courier wins the Osman C. Hooper state general excellence plaque for papers under 2500 circulation. Judges praise local news coverage, makeup, advertising, and women’s news while noting the paper’s lively, readable format and strong community involvement.
Boy Scout leaders of Clermont County elected Joe Nordman as chairman for another year at the annual meeting held Saturday night at the D X Ranch. Other officers named include Russell Speidel as vice chairman John Kemp as district commissioner W A Min as organization and extension John Friend as training Charles Shields camping and activities John Wise man advancement Albert Kistner health and safety Leonard Harding finances. Roy Liles guest speaker and George Cahull installed the new officers. Total membership rose to 1775 and the finance campaign set a record for a single year. An additional field executive was hired to assist Carlton Hyde with Brown and Clermont counties.
Union Township civic groups met January 30 at the Upper Clough Civic Club to hear Dean Taylor and George Schafer of the Zoning Commission report on Carroll W Hill and Associates plan. The two part proposal covers a complete zoning plan and a broader development study at an estimated 8250 dollars, with 4500 for part one. The group urged trustees to meet legal requirements by February 8, the final ballot-issue date for the May primary. Don Calhoun affirmed general support for zoning despite objections to conditions in the original setup. County Auditor Earle B. Kincaid noted zoning funds are not yet available unless trustees request them.
William Naegele of Amelia, president of the Clermont County Association of Home Builders, urges continued health board inspection over licensing. He warns licensing could cause monopoly, higher costs, delays, and abuses seen elsewhere, while supporting a sound code and health inspections. Plumbers association officers named include Matt Storch, Allan Chandler Jr, Ray Elton, and Elton Kennedy. County commissioners and health board urged to adopt a licensing program and plumbing code.
Gregg, assistant superintendent at the Clermont County Home, is named superintendent by county commissioners. He succeeds Clyde Boner who resigned for ill health. The Gregg family, former Felicity residents, includes Mrs. Gregg as matron and daughter Nancy a Batavia high school student.
Clarence N. Young 79 former Clermont County probate judge died at his Batavia home on Second and Wood Streets Friday. He served as probate judge 1917 to 1925 and as clerk of courts 1903 to 1909. Burial in Union Cemetery followed Monday services at Moore funeral home. Survived by widow Marie and three sisters Ada Morris Belle Goodwin and Clara Fischer of Bethel. He was active in Republican politics and a member of Bethel Lodge F and AM and Bethel Lodge IOOF.
Mrs. Jane Jones Denton of Neville wife of Nixson Denton associate editor and columnist for The Times Star died Saturday night in Good Samaritan Hospital after a long illness. Born in Louisville she was a school teacher before marrying Sept 3 1921. Survived by husband a daughter Mrs James Johnson two sisters Mrs France Raine Miss Edith Jones two brothers Evan O Jones and William O Jones. Private funeral services
Paul C. Dunham of Batavia, supervisor of CG&E Electric Distribution Tree Trimmers, marks his twenty fifth year with the utility. He began with Union Light Heat and Power in tree trimming and moved to CGE in the prior year. Dunham, born in McMinnville Tennessee, is a Nashville Bible College graduate, married with two children and eight grandchildren. His son Louis Dunham works in CG&E's Overhead division at Milford.
Billy Sesco, 33, of Spring and Water Streets Batavia, jailed on firearms charge after firing a shotgun at a seventeen year old girl who refused to enter his room. Roy Meyers, 24, same address, jailed on drunkenness and disorderly conduct charges following the incident Saturday. Patrolmen Kalcheck and Vance reported no injuries to the girl.
Sheriff Dericks and deputy Laffleur arrest 54 year old Hattie Hartwell of Afton on concealed weapon charges after a tip alleging she planned to smuggle a gun to her son Howard awaiting transfer to Mansfield reformatories. Glover, 18, Als ton, held on aiding an abetting escape. Bond set at 500 dollars for Hartwell, 2500 for aiding escape, 500 for Glover.
Clermont County announces the Kiwanis Club of Owensville will be chartered on Saturday February 4. The ceremony will be a dinner dance at 7 p.m. at the Kenwood Country Club with Milford Kiwanis members participating. Charter officers include President Ralph Sovereign Vice President Albert Schmerge Treasurer John Bauer and Secretary Don Bosch. Co chairmen are Robert Lehrer and Richard Brower.
