Farmers fail to join 100 bushel club in 1924
Ohio farmers largely did not qualify for the 100 bushels of corn per acre club in 1924. The top mark was William Gilmore of Licking County with 96.24 bushels on a 10 acre plot. The season was unfavorable for the usual crop.

Freight wreck reroutes trains over N and W to Kenova
After the C. and O. freight wreck last week, twenty coal cars derailed. Several passenger trains were diverted eastward over the Norfolk and Western to Kenova while wreckage was cleared by crews from both ends along the line.

Liberty Granted After Sister Pays Off Mays Debt
Wayne Mays of Hamilton County was jailed on charges for cashing checks not his own and placed in John Rapp's custody. His liberty was secured Saturday when his sister paid the claim and costs. Mays had traveled here with a logging firm, stayed after they left, and ran into trouble. A Christmas night armory dance at the county armory drew a large crowd, promoted by Headquarters Company of Batavia.

Christmas Exercises Draw Large Sunday School Crowds
The Christmas exercises by children at several churches were well attended with each child performing perfectly. A nice treat followed for all Sunday school scholars and organizers earned praise for their careful preparation of the events.
N R Thomson Civil War officer helped build Batavia rail line
N R Thomson dies in Milwaukee December 28 1924 at age 88 89. He served as a Civil War lieutenant and became a leading Winchester business figure. He helped secure right of way for the C E and N W Railway through Adams county and funded the Batavia depot to win support for the project. His rallying gift and the communal effort led to the railroad’s completion and burial planned on his Winchester family lot.

County Bonds Sell At Premium By County Commissioners
The Newtonsville and Vera Cruz pike bonds totaling 8 000 dollars were offered for sale by the County Commissioners last Saturday. Weil Roth & Co. of Cincinnati purchased the bonds at a bid of 67 premium. Six bidders competed, with bids close to each other.

Walter West of Scott township was arraigned for refusing 1924 dog license certificates and tags for seven dogs. Sheriff J L Trest issued a warrant after repeated notices. Deputy W W White arrested West and jailed him in West Union. West pled guilty and paid $28 total. Additional arrests expected.

Williamsburg to Get Reopened Shoe Plant Under Heyman Plan
Louis Heyman of Cincinnati has purchased the Marx Albrecht Shoe Company plant in Williamsburg Ohio from receivers. The remodeled factory will start after the new year with new machinery from St Louis and an initial output of 500 pairs daily. Hiring will aim to use the best trained workers in the shoe trade. Local workers from Williamsburg Batavia and nearby areas are invited to apply. Heyman expects to boost Williamsburg and the county with expanded facilities and equipment.
