Clermont county selects twelve jurors for the January term 1938 with names including John Miller Iva Fagby Eva Washburn Ollie Merrill Virgil Holden Charles Manning Amelia Schmitt Clarx Brancher Merrill Shively Mary Wurtz Joseph Myers Edna Heywood James Benn H J Bolander Fannie Norris Bethel Chile and others. Sixty names were drawn for petit juries. December drawings run until March when April term jurors are chosen.

Miss Amelia Griffith resigns as Village Treasurer at the end of her term January 1 and will not seek another term. Mayor appoints Mrs. Addie Hulick to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term.

Gladys Hugo Appointed Deputy Clerk for Three Years

Gladys Waggal Hugo, a stenographer in the Clerk of Courts office, was appointed deputy clerk for three years by Lee Hannah last Monday. The move aligns with enlarging the Clerk's department to handle filing of duplicates notes of ownership in Clermont county automobile sales. Hugo must furnish a $2000 bond and has worked as a stenographer since the courthouse completion about a year ago.

Milton McCullough of Felicity earned his Master of Arts degree at Ohio State University during the winter quarter convocation. He has been pursuing postgraduate work in the Liberal Arts College and was part of the graduating class of 200.

Bridge Collapse Shuts Hutchinson Road Bridge

The Davis school house bridge in Stonelick township collapsed last Thursday just after a bus loaded with children crossed. The structure on Hutchinson road is being rebuilt by workers.

Death of Hiram M. Cade 88 in Water Street Home

Hiram M. Cade 88 died at his Water Street residence where he was born and lived his life. Survived by son Frank of Dayton and daughters Edna Bennett Cincinnati Mildred Gaskins Harrisburg and Laura Cade Batavia. Funeral services Sunday at Moore Funeral Home with burial in Union Cemetery. Local relatives and friends noted visiting relatives in Cincinnati Hamilton area before burial plans.

Sneakin' Out the Back Way in Common Pleas Court

Only one case is scheduled in Common Pleas court next week per the court calendar. The case is Elizabeth Davis of Loveland against the Industrial Commission of Ohio. Mrs. Davis charges wrongful death of her husband while he was engaged in state business. The case will be heard Tuesday, January 4.

Slot machine raid nets five devices in Clermont County

Sheriff Garland G Auxier led a Sunday raid at 10 pm uncovering five slot machines. Four were at Cincinnati owner Joseph Strassell’s venues along Route 52 and in New Richmond areas. the fifth belonged to the Wesdlen Club of Milford at Rose Leaf Inn. Warrants for Strassell and Rose Leaf Inn will enforce fines above 50 dollars per machine. The operation ends Clermont County’s ongoing anti slot campaign that began November 14 with Arrowhead Inn.

Drunken Driver Held on Bond After Wreck

Clarence Robbins of Newtown was arrested Friday for driving an auto while intoxicated and wrecking it. Mayor Wiseman held a hearing and binding him over to the grand jury with a $200 bond, which he posted.

Fire destroys part of Batavia cottage on North Street

Fire at the Pew cottage owned by Mrs. Carrie Walker on North Street Friday night caused by a defective flue. The fire department acted quickly and saved the building. Loss estimated at $800 and insured.
