The town fills with lights and carols as residents prepare for Christmas. Sights and sounds evoke peace and fellowship with gifts, prayers, and shared meals reflecting the season’s joy amid some hectic days.
Harper Construction Co of Cincinnati completed the 3.4 million trunk line installation for Union Township sewer project. Restoration remains by the contractor. County Commissioners approve closing Harper’s Mt. Carmel office on Barbeau Consulting’s recommendation. Two treatment plants at Willowville and Summerside inspected by the U S Public Health Service. Project dedication awaits federal approval and cost sharing. Employment of two clerks ended Jan 1.
The 19th annual Clermont County Children’s Christmas Party drew more than 100 needy children for a day of gifts and festivities. Santa arrived by helicopter to distribute presents after noon activities at Frisch's Mainliner following events at McAlpin's Kenwood Shopping Center.
The State Department of Education extends until March 23 a $315,000 building aid offer to Goshen School District contingent on a $655,000 bond issue and a 50 cent per $1000 tax levy. Both items failed at Sept 21 and Nov 2 elections. another special election is expected in February.
State Finance Director Richard L. Krabach announced Clermont will receive $40.5 million in state funded improvements over the next four years. Projects include highways totaling $35 million, schools $5,113,220, Stone Lick State Park $335,377, airport $100,000, East Fork $5,000, Batavia Armory $5,232, with funding from state federal and local sources.
The Union Township trustees approved contracts with Withamsville and North Union Volunteer Fire Departments for 1966, each totaling 21500. A Littleford Brothers rep discussed township purchase of a distributor. Transfers of 655 from S-1 to S-3 in General Fund and December meeting expenses totaled 6367.22 with allocations to Cemetery Fund Road Funds General Fund and Miscellaneous.
The Ohio Historical Society approved a $1 792 maintenance contract to Fred Stairs for repairing and painting the Grant Birthplace State Memorial at Pt Pleasant. Reroofing of the birthplace and garage will be done, with work to finish before April when the presidential memorial opens for the 1966 season.
The Clermont County Neediest Kids Christmas Fund issues a final appeal in its sixth year to aid nearly 5000 county children. Last minute gifts may be left at Legion Posts, with money orders or checks payable to Clermont County Neediest Kids Christmas Fund mailed to American Legion Box 311 Batavia Ohio. All funds support children as the Legion covers program expenses.
Robert L. Goepper named chairman of the Business Gifts Division for the 1966 Clermont County Heart Fund Drive. He will recruit a committee to canvass non residential areas visiting stores offices theaters hotels and factories as part of Heart Days for Business February 1 to 12. Gene Courts reports 1965 donation of 1745 and hopes 1966 reaches 2000. Goepper is with Addressograph Data Processing in Cincinnati and active in Heart work with three children and wife Barbara.
The Clermont County Grand Jury returned true bills against 17 persons and ignored charges against two. Indicted are Robert Ogden and his brother Ronald for property destruction and burglary respectively, plus listed counts of rape sodomy larceny and more involving multiple residents. The jury ignored charges against Ronald Seward and Bobby Richman and commended Sheriff Watson and wife for jail conditions.
Harold Bissantz of Batavia Township is reelected president of the Cler mont County Trustees and Clerks Association. Harley Clark of Pierce Township is reelected vice president. Minton Christman of Miami Township is secretary treasurer. John Freeman of Jackson Township is reelected vice president with Christman serving as secretary treasurer.
State Auditor Roger Cloud announced the final annual gas tax distribution. Clermont county received 20000 dollars and each township got 800 dollars. Municipalities statewide were allotted 5156 dollars each.
The year’s final gas tax distribution totals 4,599,241.50 bringing 1965 sub division payments to 61,475,344.50, with cities and villages receiving 1,780,841.50 counties 1,760,000 and townships 1,058,400. Clermont allocations include 26,423,744.50 to municipalities, 22,880,000 to counties, and 12,171,600 to townships.
Clermont County Commissioners will elect a chairman on January 3. Ralph Houser, current chairman, is likely to be succeeded by Stanley Cann, both Democrats, with Arthur Blake a remaining Republican former chair. The board will appoint a clerk, assistants, and other staff and approve salaries. Jurisdiction budgets and county office appropriations hinge on Auditor Earl Metzger’s revenue certification, with the auditor predicting the year will end in the black, about $100,000.
Clermont County Auditor H Earl Metzer will not certify the .3 mill levy for the Little Miami River Conservancy District. The levy would raise 30 cents per $1000 of property value to fund organizational costs and planning before bond money arrives. Only Hamilton County plans to collect. the decision stems from an injunction suit in Clinton County. If collected, funds would be redistributed if later ruled illegal, risking a 10 percent penalty to the treasurer. If found legal, taxpayers would see the tax on 1967 and 1968 bills, affecting all Clermont townships except Pierce, Monroe, Washington, and Franklin.
