Cordelia Stickel 97, Batavia resident, dies
Cordelia Stickel aged 97 of Clermont County Batavia passes away Sunday night at her daughter Maude Nichols home. She was born June 20 1847 to Col John Denham who served in the War of 1812. Services set for 2 30 PM at Bantam Ohio Presbyterian Church with burial in Bethel Cemetery. Her grandchildren include Capt Robert Hitch in Ecuador and Capt Thomas Hitch of the Army Air Forces. She was a poet and pianist who became bedfast after a fall five months ago.

Arthur C. Lewis, 62, of Camp Dennison, died apparently of a heart attack while driving to work on Indian Hill. He was a longtime resident and employee of R. K. Le Blonde Machine Tool Co. Services were held at Monroe Funeral Home Milford with burial at Mi amiville Cemetery. Surviving: widow Nellie Tittle Lewis, daughter Hazel Wagenstahl, a son Pvt. Richard Lewis at Camp Lejeune, and sister Alice MacFarland.

County Kitchens Turn to Tin for War Items
In Clermont County women can mine tin to produce 98 torpedoes this year based on 1943 civilian canned food consumption. J A Stewart of the American Can Company says civilians will open about 2 762 832 cans in 1943 and 28 000 cans yield one torpedo. He notes armed forces used about three billion cans in 1943 and needs will rise to 3.25 billion. The can is seen as the practical container for overseas food shipments.

Afton Man Found Dead In Field
The body of 46 year old Dewey Huxell was found in a field near Afton after likely suffering a heart attack and crawling to avoid traffic. He had lived with his sister Mrs. Mary Grether in Afton for nine weeks and left Friday night. The death is considered likely to be from exposure after the attack. The body was found by Walter Morgan and viewed by Dr. Allan B. Rapp and Dr. Miles Scott. Funeral arrangements are handled by Moore funeral home of Batavia.

Amelia Marine Awarded Purple Heart in Major Ceremony
Marine Private First Class Thomas W. Hoskins of Amelia Ohio received the Purple Heart at a large Pacific base ceremony alongside 372 Marines wounded on Saipan and Tinian. Major General Clifton B. Cates presented the medals and praised the recipients as heroes. Hoskins was wounded July 30 on Tinian by shell fire and has since returned to duty. He joined the Marine Corps in September 1942 and is a veteran of the Marshall Islands campaign.
