Joseph E Rankin a scout with Maj T T Thornburgh rode 170 miles in 24 hours to warn Rawlings Wyo of Payne’s trapped comrades after Thornburgh was killed by Utes near Milk River Colorado His ride enabled Col Wesley Merritt to rescue Payne and his troops. Rankin then guided Merritt to the camp and the Utes were driven off by dawn the following day.
