Sheriff John B. Rapp and deputies rushed to Goshen at 7:80 p.m. to arrest moonshine sellers but no affidavits were filed and no one appeared. Reported dealers visit the area weekly, supplying pike employees. residents note broader moonshine activity and vow tougher action to stop the trade.
The zero hour nears in Ohio's soldier bonus drive as 20 million dollars in bonds bearing 4 percent interest are issued for semi annual payments. About 10,000 heirs may receive full allotments, with branch offices planned in all 88 county courthouses to aid veterans filling papers. The first year will pay 2.96 million in principal and interest, decreasing over 10 years until retirement.
Miss Alice Gray died in Cincinnati on Saturday of pneumonia following a brief illness. She spent summers in Batavia with the ride where she lived as a girl and later made her home with Mrs. H. O. Weaver. Former Amelia resident and public school pupil of the late Joseph Gray. Funeral in Cincinnati on Monday.
G Forest Brown of Lebanon was elected Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Ohio. The race had four candidates with 29,068 eligible voters in 782 lodges. Brown’s plurality was 927. The post is seen as a stepping stone to Grand Master, with tradition favoring successive promotions.
The Frank W. Weaver Post of the American Legion met in the Sheriff’s office Friday night to discuss buying a suitable building or constructing one funded by Batavia citizens donations. No action due to lack of information on offered buildings or costs. A committee will investigate options and another will seek erection details. In Batavia Armory a double header featured Bethel vs Batavia girls and Headquarters Company against the Potters of Cincinnati. The Potters won 26 to 17 over Headquarters, with Snow and Ashburn stars. Potters’ teamwork and polished play drew praise while Batavia and Bethel girls drew a large crowd.
One of the season s finest dances will be held at the Batavia Armory on Friday night December 28. Music by Young s Arion Melody Boys noted for fine productions. An evening of pleasure awaits attendees with friends coming from a distance.
The wedding of Carl Harley Rush and Migs Velmalee Griffith took place at 2 p.m. on Thursday December 15 at Columbia Avenue Christian church Cincinnati with Rev Floyd A Keeling officiating. The couple plans to reside in Batavia after a Middletown visit, as Rush works as a civil engineer with KE R Justice and has duties with the state highway commission.

Over two weeks traffic to Batavia for the tobacco market brought trucks from all directions. The opening day drew many spectators as buyers and speculators filled the sale that started Monday at nine in the morning and ran past four in the afternoon. Prices ranged from 6 to 64 cents with a floor average around 27 cents. Major leaf buyers from Reynolds, American Tobacco, Lorillard, and Liggett & Myers led the buying, with opening sales on over 160000 pounds and many speculators present. Thursday’s sale was postponed to Saturday due to Liggett & Myers absence.
