Ripley market sees high tobacco averages and local notes

Clermont County growers report strong yields at the Ripley market. County Supt. Frank Hoggatt recovers at home after a hospital scare and begins outdoor exercise. Christmas trees will be set up at the Courier office by Mrs. Margaret Sprague and Dorothy Warren. Local attorney Victor Schmidt, in the Blomer versus Mt. Carmel Glen Este case, is a former classmate of Judge Harry Britton and Ray Bradford. Earle Kincaid notes a loyal Sunday School attendance, missing only once in ten years.

Batavia Lodge 104 Installs Officers for Year

Batavia Lodge No. 104 F and A M installed its officers for the coming year on December 14. District Deputy Grand Master Paul Thomassen served as installing officer with Marshall Olin M. Ashton and a list of named officers. Members then dined on oyster stew after the ceremony.

No Gambling In County Crackdown Warns Offenders

Clermont County authorities led by Sheriff Clyde Dericks and Prosecuting Attorney Ray Bradford announce a countywide gambling ban targeting slot machines pinball machines and other cash paying devices. A machine was recently seized as a warning to violators who face charges.

Robinson Wins Case Against Insurance Group

James F. Robinson of Locust Corner won a $2,650 judgment in Court of Common Pleas before Judge Harry Britton. He sued Sandy and Beaver Valley Farmers Mutual Protection Insurance Company over home fire loss last April. The Grange affiliated mutual refused payment citing policy conflicts. a new trial was requested and settlement possible.

Suit filed to reinstate pupil refusing flag salute

In Clermont County, a petition asks the Mt. Carmel Glen Este School District to lift a suspension of six year old Joseph Blomer who was expelled for refusing to pledge allegiance. The suit cites Jehovah’s Witness beliefs and cites a 1943 Supreme Court decision. A temporary restraining order is sought to restore the boy to school.

Christmas Party for Kiddies at Williamsburg Theater

The Happy Hour Theatre in Williamsburg announces a gala Christmas party for children this Saturday morning. Attendees should be seated by 10 AM for Santa Claus arrival and a program including the want feature and comedies, with a present for each child.

VFW Auxiliary to Present Gifts at Loveland Hospital

The Auxiliary of F. W. Post 3954 will visit Loveland Hospital December 27 to serve meals and present gifts to about 250 mentally ill veterans. Donation requests include cotton socks size large or men’s white handkerchiefs. Packages go to Mrs. E. S. Griswold Route 3 Loveland Hospital Chairman or a card may be sent for pickup by a group member.

Courier shifts deadline for holiday issue

The Courier moves next week’s issue to press Tuesday afternoon due to Christmas. Correspondents and advertisers must submit all copy to the Courier office by Monday. The office will be closed all day Christmas.

Real Estate Tax Increase Benefits County Schools

After Clermont County property revaluation, the County Treasurer will collect about 84,067 more in 1947 than 1946. Schools are set to receive roughly 65,767 of the total, about 78.2 percent, with the remainder split among county government, townships, and towns and villages. Tax books open December 30 following the autumn convocation December 19.

Fruit Growers Meet Draws 94 Attendees at Batavia

Ninety four farmers attended the annual fruit growers meeting in the Batavia school cafeteria on Monday evening. H. J. Bolender presided as president and T. H. Parks and Frank Beach were present. Howard Elliott from the local Experiment Station spoke on DDT use. Beach stressed higher quality fruit for future markets and lower prices, while Parks focused on insect pest elimination to raise quality. County Agent W. W. Hamilton noted the unusually large turnout as a sign of growing industry interest.

Legion Buys Land for Permanent Home in Batavia

The Frank W Weaver Post of the American Legion bought an 18 acre tract with 600 foot Route 74 frontage from Mrs Mary Katherine Sellman for 1775 dollars as a potential permanent home. A building committee reported favorably and authorization was given to purchase with funds available. Plans for construction were not yet set.

Christmas Program at Williamsburg School

Williamsburg school presents a Christmas program Monday December 23 at 8 00 pm in the auditorium directed by Mrs Louise Krum featuring a chorus of over five hundred pupils from elementary to senior high. The show titled Back to Bethlehem blends song and dramatized dialogue with solos and offerings by Boys and Girls Glee Clubs and an instrumental ensemble. The finale by combined junior and senior high choirs retells the Christmas Story adapted for the occasion and about one thousand patrons are expected.

Veterans residence planned at Jackson Township Community House

Clermont County commissioners seek to convert Jackson Township community center spaces previously used by the National Youth Administration into a residence for one World War II veteran and his family. Nine temporary dwelling units may be purchased for temporary use around the county. Girl Scout Troup 310 of Newtown will hold a Christmas party at the Tiemeyers residence Friday at 3:30 PM with a gift exchange.
