Christmas Rush at Clermont Postal Service

In Clermont County the postal system faces a holiday surge with thousands of packages and cards moving through P O windows. Readers circulate the Courier widely, including a copy sent to the state penitentiary where inmates, many sharp readers, pass it along. Judge Harry Britton’s decision in Williams vs Boehm was upheld by the State Supreme Court. An expectant announcement is promised in next week’s Courier.

Dolan Wins Suit For Insurance Payment

W L Dolan of Batavia won $4600 from Clermont County Common Pleas Court after a trial last Thursday. The Sandy Beaver Valley Insurance Company must pay to cover a March 26 fire loss. The defense objected to paying $1500 for personal property.

Christmas Program Planned in Milford Church Event

The Milford Methodist Church schedules a Sunday 4:30 pm Christmas cantata led by Miss Lillian Hyde. A church-school party follows. At 8 pm the Community Christmas Party assembles around a large tree at Mill and Water Streets for carols.

Mobile X Ray Unit to Visit Clermont County

The Clermont County Tuberculosis and Health Association will host a meeting at 8:00 p.m. Monday to map a schedule for a free mobile X ray unit. From the 10th to the 27th the state funded unit will visit the county offering free examinations and reports to all adults and high school students.

The Community Club plans a Christmas party for all New Richmond school children on December 18 following a Christmas pageant and carols. Santa Claus will distribute candy and oranges. Club officers include Mrs. William Hartman president and Mrs. Floyd Johns vice president.

Burley Tobacco Quota Set by Secretary Anderson

Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson today set a 1948 national marketing quota for Burley tobacco at 474 wanes under the Agricultural Adjustment Act as amended. The move will cut individual farm acreage allotments by about 10 percent, with existing allotments of nine tenths of an acre or less remaining unchanged due to current law. The quota reflects supply and demand and aims to reduce stocks after higher yields per acre.

Cars Sideswipe On Route 74 Collision

Two autos sustained considerable damage after a sideswipe on Route 74 near Batavia. James Martin and John Lutes were involved. Martin’s car left the highway, crossed a yard, hit two trees and stopped near Donnie Johns’ new residence. Deputies Marvin Bissantz and Prank Hutchinson investigated.

Santa to visit Williamsburg Christmas Eve program

Santa will appear at 7:00 p m on Christmas Eve in Williamsburg at Third and Main Streets. Children should bring parents and friends. Santa has a present for all. Smith Guilty of Auto Theft in Clermont County

In a Clermont County Common Pleas Court jury trial Elmo Smith of Bethel was found guilty of stealing Garland Auxier’s automobile from Batavia last March. Smith, indicted in May, jumped bond and was later returned from Brownsville Texas. An appeal for a new trial has been filed and the offense could bring one to 20 years in prison.

A Clermont County jury found Raymond Donohue not guilty in a 1947 case. A petit jury sentenced Monday and new juries were to be drawn to serve in 1948 for ongoing court activity.

Santa will visit the Eagles Lodge from eight to nine o clock to give a gift to every child. If the weather is bad he will be inside.

Milford Man Charged With Rape

Walter Smith, 43, of Milford, appeared before Mayor Louis Kiewne on a charge of attempting to rape a juvenile. He was released on a $500 bond and bound over to the Clermont County grand jury.

Garden Club Plans Home Decoration Contest and Awards

The Reteria Garden Club will award prizes for best holiday decorated homes and doorways with first and second awards in each class. Judging begins at 7 30 p m on December 23. Participants are asked to have lights on Tuesday evening. Mrs W B Miller heads the decorations committee.

Allotments Total Acreage Shifts Across Years for Tobacco Farms

Quota poundage figures converted to acreages from 1942-46 yields show 18 allotments totaling about 438 000 acres, versus 469 000 acres in 1947 and 560 000 acres in 1946. For 1948 about 498 000 acres are to be allotted with reserve near one percent to fund new tobacco farms and adjust existing allotments.

Preparations Underway for Batavia Christmas Celebration

In Batavia the annual Christmas festivities are being readied with a tree and street lights in place. Attorney John Moore heads the organizing committee for the Christmas service as the Batavia school party begins at 10 30 Friday. About 400 candy boxes from the Community Christmas Punch will be distributed and next Wednesday baskets of food and gifts will aid about 50 needy families. Backed by fraternal and civic groups, the Christmas Fund seeks further contributions via Mr. Moore.

A former Milford resident Miss Oueal died last Wednesday at Bethesda Home in Cincinnati. Funeral services were held Saturday.

Damage suit filed over traffic collision near Hamlet

William Moore of Hamersville files a $10,000 damage suit in Cler Court against William Boothby claiming Boothby was intoxicated and drove left of center on December 22, 1946, striking Moore as he assisted another motorist, causing a brain concussion and an arm injury leading to partial paralysis.

Highway Improvement Considered for Stonelick Lake Project

Bids for clearing the lake site of the Stonelick recreation project in Wayne Township Clermont County are being sought. The 1200 acre park and lake, already state owned, will cost about 400000. Edenton is nearest village. the area is bordered by State Highways 133 and 7211. If bids are awarded in January, work may start next summer.

Howard E. Friedrich mayor elect of Newtown was chosen President of the Clermont County Methodist Men's Brotherhood in Batavia. He has held all offices, with C. D. Wallace of Amelia as Vice President and Merten of Forestville as Secretary Treasurer. John Friend of Batavia named program chairman.

Pierson Addresses Republican Women of Clermont County

Tom Pierson urged the Clermont County Republican Women to start the 1948 campaign early for a complete Republican victory. Pierson, president of the Clermont County Veterans Republican Club, spoke at the Amelia club meeting and was reelected president.
