Smith Guilty of Auto Theft in Clermont County
In a Clermont County Common Pleas Court jury trial Elmo Smith of Bethel was found guilty of stealing Garland Auxier’s automobile from Batavia last March. Smith, indicted in May, jumped bond and was later returned from Brownsville Texas. An appeal for a new trial has been filed and the offense could bring one to 20 years in prison.

Allotments Total Acreage Shifts Across Years for Tobacco Farms
Quota poundage figures converted to acreages from 1942-46 yields show 18 allotments totaling about 438 000 acres, versus 469 000 acres in 1947 and 560 000 acres in 1946. For 1948 about 498 000 acres are to be allotted with reserve near one percent to fund new tobacco farms and adjust existing allotments.
Preparations Underway for Batavia Christmas Celebration
In Batavia the annual Christmas festivities are being readied with a tree and street lights in place. Attorney John Moore heads the organizing committee for the Christmas service as the Batavia school party begins at 10 30 Friday. About 400 candy boxes from the Community Christmas Punch will be distributed and next Wednesday baskets of food and gifts will aid about 50 needy families. Backed by fraternal and civic groups, the Christmas Fund seeks further contributions via Mr. Moore.

Damage suit filed over traffic collision near Hamlet
