From the N C Bulletin Nov 23 details the capture of Saltillo by Gen Worths Division and the advance on Monclova by Gen Wool. Wool reaches Monclova with 2600 troops and begins restoring communications. Gov Lopez seeks peace terms. Mexican towns on the route express relief as Santa Annas forces gather toward the Sierra del Madre. Tampico garrisoned with naval and army units.
An officer reports the Tennessee volunteers left with eleven hundred men and 1000 embarked at New Orleans. On parade only 150 are absent due to sickness and hospital discharges. The Mississippi regiment numbers 250. Overall health of the army has greatly improved.
The Ohio legislature pushed bills on two topics. In the Senate a proposal to invite city clergy to open sessions with prayer passed 24 to 9, amid constitutional debate. In the House a measure to print Governor’s Message in English and German failed, though some praised German representation and economy.
New York papers add the names of 28 lost aboard the Atlantic and list other perished passengers including H. H. Ciunlaghstorie York Th. Symmes Baldwin de Dr M. Watson Samson Eames Mise Smart Mrs Thom lon and child Archibald Austin and Robert Hope. Many bodies remain unrecovered as wreck removal looms.
A letter from Col. Doniphan’s Missouri volunteers in Santa Fe depicts a fragile, hypocritical peace under foreign officers. Reports say 1000 infantry are en route, provisions failing, and a looming winter hunger with ten days of food left. Local Mexicans drift away amid social mixing and worn-out morale among troops.
Descriptions from Ireland show widespread destitution in Connaught with public works stalled, workhouses full, and families starving while charity aids some meals. In Washington, Mr. Webster honors the volunteer guards bound for Mexico and remarks on national resolve as political turmoil and tariff disputes continue.
The Washington Union renames the Whig party as Federalist and urges scrutiny of who truly props up Federalism. It notes many old Federalists now lead the Locofoco faction and lists prominent names such as James Buchanan, William Wilkins, Richard Rush, and Levi Woodbury among those aligned with the current political shift.
Ohio Whig majority in Congress sits near five thousand, while Locofocos allege gerrymandering to cheat fair representation. The column notes blame shifting after a failed apportionment plan and discusses frontier issues, shipping, and arsonous experimentation with cotton as gunpowder substitute sparking debate on policy and safety.
The Cincinnati Chronicle reports the revenue cutter Geo. M. Bibb, rebuilt after a prior machinery failure and sinking on the way from Pittsburgh, proved fast and graceful on a five mile test voyage. Guests praised the vessel and Cincinnati mechanics for a distinguished restoration.
The Washington Union reports Federalists carried Pennsylvania New York and Ohio signaling a revival. It credits revival of the party and notes strong political currents. The text mocks Democratic weakness and contrasts with Federalist gains across major states.
