Batavia cagers faced rough play from New Richmond in a 34 21 loss on the local court described as the roughest high school game here. The writer criticizes the New Richmond coach and calls for better sportsmanship, noting officiating and conduct as key issues.
Last Saturday George Davis resigned as Chief Deputy Sheriff of Clermont County to take a guard position at the Milling Machine plant in Oakley. Sheriff Auxier named John E. Brothers of Afton as assistant until January 6 when Sheriff-elect Thomas Brooks and his deputies assume control.
Clermont County ends dog quarantine after Ohio State Health Department results show twelve rabies proofs among dogs examined. Dr. J A Carter praises local alertness and cooperation in halting the disease’s advance.
Total sales tax collections in Clermont County from January 1, 1940 to the week ended November 23, 1940 were 101,529.21 dollars, compared with 78,894.36 dollars for the same period last year, per State Treasurer Don H. Ebright.
The suit Rudler versus Maffey will be heard by Judge White next Monday over a guardianship claim for Charles Maffey with the plaintiff seeking 397 dollars. The defendant argues the amount is not due for guardianship and personal care. A public sale is announced at the L. G. Parker Farm near Marathon on December 21.
The Batavia Garden Club plans a December 16 gathering at Mrs. C. J. McClay’s home. Program includes Thoughts on Snow and The Story of Silent Night by Mrs. Spangler. Local Draft Board No 1 has sent 147 questionnaires. 53 acted on, 19 placed in Class 1 A and 35 in the deferral group. One was cited for classification but may change after medical exams. Board No 2 sent 300 questionnaires with 175 classified, 45 in Class A and 1 in 1 D. 7 examined so far. Both boards aim for 20 percent classified by year’s start.
Plans for a charity basketball event by the Batavia Rotary Club against Mt Carmel Bloomer Girls to raise funds for the Batavia Christmas fund. A police detail will guard spectators at the 7:30 PM game on December 16 at Batavia School gym. a return match is set for December 19 at Mt Carmel gym.
Batavia Public Schools the music department presents a Christmas pageant in the local auditorium. The Nativity tale with shepherds and gifts unfolds to sacred carols as Ruth Callahan reads verbal continuity. Elementary students join in the musical backing and cast.
Batavia P T A will hold its December meeting in the school auditorium Thursday at 8 PM. President Mrs Pauline McCloy will run the routine business while John Friend Clermont County treasurer and Boy Scout leader speaks on All American. The public is invited.
The Junior Woman's Club of Batavia hosts a charity ball at the local Armory this Friday night with proceeds to charity. Admission is 1 per couple or 75 cents per single, dancing from ten to two, featuring Billy Snider and his Kentucky Colonels.
Harvey Henderson returns before Judge White on a deferred sentence for non support. The judge previously handed a probationary term which prosecutors say he has not fulfilled. Allegations include failure to provide for his family and consorting with other women. The case is expected to proceed to severe penalties.
The Eastern Star Chapter installed new officers Monday evening. Officers include Worthy Matron Daisy Wilson and Worthy Patron Homer Wilson, with Gertrude Hillin as Associate Matron and John Fetzer as Associate Patron. Other posts filled by Bertha H. Rush, Mary Homan, Edith Bauer, Hazel Studor, Virginia Shinkle, Theresa Feree, August Hulick, Dora Me Afee, and Louis Bauer.
The Batavia Grange will hold its Christmas party on December 1. Attendees are asked to bring a 10 cent gift and fruit candy or nuts for the event.
Batavia forms a Central Civic Committee with church school and fraternal group reps to oversee Christmas charity. They will list needy families, assemble food baskets and toys, deliver gifts by Christmas, and run White Gift Sundays. Fire lights street decorations and a Community Christmas tree will be displayed on Main Street.
The Selective Service Board of Appeals for the First Appellate District gains a permanent location at 511-A Hamilton County courthouse Cincinnati, serving But ler Hamilton Warren Clinton and Clermont counties. Local holiday decor visible as Main Street lights stretch from the bridge to the Sohio station with Batavia merchants displaying festive windows and Santa seen at Ayers Hardware.
Alfred Halter of Georgetown formerly Batavia, a Batavia Lodge F. and A. M. member, buried Tuesday at 3:30 PM in Olive Branch Cemetery. Albert Johnson of Madisonville, former Clermont County resident, received the 50 year medal from Py tavia Lodge F. and A. M. last year.
