Ohio State University entomologist H R Willson cautions that potato leafhoppers can cause serious alfalfa yield losses as cutting cycles progress. Regular sweep-net monitoring guides targeted rescue treatments, applying insecticides only when five or more leafhoppers appear in 10 sweeps at regrowth under six inches or 15 or more in 10 sweeps when alfalfa stands are 12 inches or taller. Some fields show economic infestations. others do not.
