Williamsburg Officer Wounded in Sicilian Campaign
Second Lieutenant Carl G. Foster 24 of Williamsburg was wounded by shrapnel in the Sicily campaign and transferred to a base hospital in North Africa. He helped guard President Roosevelt at Casablanca and has been awarded the Purple Heart. He trained at Fort Lewis and Fort Benning after enlisting February 1941.

Ashburn General Hospital dedicated at McKinney Texas honors Col Percy Moreau Ashburn, veteran Army surgeon and former superintendent of Columbia Hospital for Women. The hospital has 110 buildings 50 wards 279 acres and 1520 beds with 80 officers and 165 nurses.

New Richmond soldier Pvt. Stanley Watson was seriously wounded in action in North Africa on July 12, per a War Department telegram to his aunt Mrs. Blanche Tarvin. Watson, with the Medical Corps, has been in the area since early June after working at Metzger Hardware. Other local casualties include Pvt. Harold Reese killed in April and Sgt. Charles Tremper and Sgt. Archer Gee seriously wounded in prior months.

Lt Robert Winspear formerly of New Richmond and now in the Air Force served as bombardier on a Fortress during the England North Africa shuttle raid. He and two gunners helped locate and rescue missing fliers who had wandered in the North African jungle after a doomed Wellington and B 25 crash. The Flight Spot Remover, led by Lt Keith Harris of Earlville Illinois, weathered shelling and engine problems, including fuel transfer and oxygen loss near the Alps before landing on three.
