The Clermont County Fair drew crowds to the Ted Davis booth and other activities. Community events include queen contest ballots, Amelia Festival plans for September, the Miller reunion, and social gatherings at Tabasco and Batavia with local officials, Lions Club, and VFW involvement.
Marine Sergeant Frank L. Cooper of Amelia is reported en route to the Korean battlefront. He serves with B Company Second Shore Party Battalion First Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. His brother Charles Cooper has enlisted in the Air Force and is in 14 weeks of basic training in San Antonio. Both are Amelia High School graduates.
Senator Robert Taft will tour three Ohio counties on August 28 as part of his bid for a third U S Senate term. He will hold meetings in Milford Batavia Williamsburg Manchester West Union and a 5 p m rally at the Georgetown Brown county Fair Grounds. He is a Republican policy committee chair and a longtime public official with national prominence.
Miss Virginia Glins of Owensville near Batavia has been accepted for the 1950 51 freshman class at the University of Cincinnati College of Liberal Arts announced by Dean George B Barbour She is a June graduate of Owensville High School daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert H Glins Route 3 Batavia active in county 4 H with blue ribbon livestock honors Liberal Arts now housed in the new 2 million McMicken Hall as part of Cincinnati University's post war expansion.
Four Clermont County men are listed casualties by the Defense Department. Corporal Ernest L. Cole, 20, of Loveland is slightly wounded. Private First Class Edward J. Rayles, 17, of Marathon, listed as missing in action, enlisted November 17, 1949. Private First Class Lester Bush, 18, of Bethel, missing in action. Private First Class Jack Paytes, 21, of Loveland, missing in action.
Officers Mildred Willis Hazel Riley Cora Mercer and William Mercer lead the New Richmond club the first of its kind in Clermont County with 21 members formed May 4 1950. Members host county candidate discussions plan a permanent club home and sponsor speaker events including Miss E C Pate who praised Taft and Don Ebright.
Clermont County prepares for the first wartime draft with 69 youths called in September. Five are ordered to report to Cincinnati for further orders, while 35 receive notices for pre induction physicals on September 6. The following week 34 more will receive orders, totaling 69 for the month.
Sheriff Clyde Dericks and Batavia police chief Ed Colonel led arrests of seven youths linked to two robberies. Three boys were detained after a fishing camp at Lake Salter looting with four poles and five reels recovered. Four youths in custody for theft of antiques worth $100 from a Batavia residence.
Amelia Village, through James Walker, sues seven property owners to obtain land for Rt. 125 widening. Village plans 10 mill bonds to fund the project, with most claims expected settled out of court. Widening to start this fall, about one year to finish, 40 feet wide with a two foot lawn strip.
Batavia Public Schools will open Tuesday September 5 with a half day for registration. Principal Paul Knop ping announces bus routes similar to last season. Cafeteria lunch service starts September 6 with new dish washer. Home economics gets new equipment in a new department area. Senior class funds boost the Commercial Department with new desks. PTA funds refurnish an elementary classroom for sixth grade. Vaccination and physical education rules urge compliance.
Thieves used a stolen flatboat to haul $400 in new tires and a cigarette machine from the Valley Garage on Route 52 in New Richmond Friday night. Police Chief Fred Koch investigates after entry was gained by forcing a rear window. the cigarette machine was found near Lock and Dam 35 and the boat abandoned three miles west of New Richmond. Chief Hoht said the boat was taken from Robert Painter who had anchored it near the garage.
The Batavia Boy Scout troop will hold a paper drive on Wednesday August 23 starting at 1 p m. Residents should have papers ready. Help is available by calling Chas L Schneider at Batavia 4461 or William Earhart at Batavia 6812.
Newly elected Frank W. Weaver Post American Legion officers were installed Sunday August 20 at the new Route 74 Ba tavia home. About 100 members and guests attended the 6 30 p m meeting and potluck supper. Officers include Eliott A Compton commander J M Steele first vice commander Peter Andres second vice commander Maurice Miller adjutant Richard Jamieson finance officer Rev Fred M Mark chaplain Paul Lewis sergeant at arms James Griffith Lonnie Garner trustees. Installing officers were Howard Hawkins past Fourth District commander and William Frische past Fourth District sergeant at arms.
Fred R. Sanders a 63 year old Cincinnati man appeared in Vice Mayor Homer Wilsons court in Batavia Monday night and was fined 25 dollars plus costs for reckless operation of a motor vehicle and 5 dollars plus costs for failing to have a license. The fines stem from an August 6 accident involving Sanders and James F. Iles 24 of Williamsburg who faced the charges.
A Republican headquarters for Clermont County opens in the Millcroft Inn Milford and will host clubs and organizations for meetings on request. It is open daily and may stay open evenings during the fall campaign. Volunteer workers will staff the office which also serves as Ohio Republican Finance Committee headquarters with E. C. Eastwood of Bethel as a vice chairman.
Don Evans of Batavia reports aboard the carrier U S S Sitkoh Bay on September 10. A Navy veteran with 18% years in active service and five years in the Organized Naval Reserve, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Evans of Williamsville. During World War II he served 30 years in the South Pacific aboard a cruiser submarine and in naval aviation. His wife Helen, daughter of Mr and Mrs B L Larkin of Batavia, teaches in Batavia schools.
