Possum Care at Clermont County Fair Tent

Attendants from the Clermont County Sportsmen’s tent at the county fair cared for a month-old possum after a mother was killed jay walking near Owenville. Don Feagan and Pete Palan fed the young marsupial with a medicine dropper while nine orphans reached the tent. drivers delivered them hoping to find homes, some planned with litters of kittens. The caretakers warned mothers that the young might lack hair on their tails and may hang by it.

Court Adjourns After Two-Week Civil Session

One hundred years ago the court adjourned Wednesday morning after a fortnight of sessions largely civil in nature. Much business was disposed of and the murder case of Martin was continued to the fall term as he swore he was not prepared for trial.

Ben nets and Withams Family Reunion at Ball Island

Fifty years ago on August 19 1896 the Ben nets and Withams families held a reunion at Ball Island in this county. The two clans boast about 1500 relatives with annual journeys from most states to attend the feast. Originating from the South they settled at Withamsville, a small settlement referenced in the note.

Truck Crash Ren ders Lafe Powell Unconscious on Bridge Collapse

Twenty five years ago Lafe Powell of Mulberry was rendered unconscious when a rock truck he drove collapsed a bridge over Red Bird Hollow on the road to Mt. Carmel. The rear of the nearly 50 foot bridge sank as the front wheels stayed on the road. Powell was revived and returned to work.

Clermont County Fair Sees Strong Exhibits Despite Rain

Rain cut attendance at the Clermont County Fair last week while favorable weather drew a large crowd. Races were rained out Thursday and Friday but exhibits improved over last year. Four H displays were among the state’s best. Fair Board officers were reelected: F. W. Schobent president, C. L. Jones vice president, J. W. Evans secretary, A. F. Keyser treasurer.

Batavia High School Adds Five New Faculty Members

Batavia announces five new teachers to join the Batavia High School staff for the opening of the school year. The roster includes Myrtle Wilson as principal of primary grades, Ruth Murray, Mary Rubey, Helen Evans, Marjorie Harrion, Ornella Summers, and Ruth Cobbler in the lower grades, with Elmer Kramer Alfred Rigner and Paul Hopping among upper grades, plus Edmond Parrott as superintendent. Janitor Robert Jones remains. First Grade expected to be the largest ever, split between two teachers. Classes start with 9 15 to 12 00 on Tuesday and Wednesday, amid optimistic postwar facilities' peak.

Photography Contest Extended by Weather at Clermont County Fair

Unfavorable weather limited entries at the Clermont County Fair. The Courier extends its photo contest to include amateur photos taken in the past year. Entry deadline is August 30 with prizes of 10 for first and ten other prizes.

Mosbacker to Return Home for Discharge

Albert P. Mosbacker of Batavia Ohio a Technician Fifth Grade in the Eighth Army in Japan was selected with the 1st Cavalry Division to return to the United States for demobilization after 19 months overseas He is a two campaign veteran and bears the Asiatic Pacific and Philippine Liberation ribbons two stars each along with the Good Conduct Victory and Combat Infantryman badges He attended Bethel High School and joined the Army August 11 1944 with basic training at Fort Riley Kansas His parents Mr and Mrs Mosbacker live on R R No 2 Batavia Ohio.

Legion Carnival in Batavia to Support Post Building Fund

The Frank W. Weaver Post 237 of the American Legion will sponsor a carnival in Batavia from August 26 to 31. Proceeds support the Post Building Fund and the event will be on Fourth Street.

County 4 H Style Show Winners To Model Clothing At State Fair

Clermont County 4 H style queens head to the Ohio State Fair in Columbus August 28 to showcase dresses they made as first place winners at the Clermont County Fair in Owensville. The event features demonstrations and a photograph of winners with entries including sport suits cotton dresses tailored dresses and complete costumes.

Clermont County Health Department urges parents to prepare children for school with physical exams focusing on sight hearing and dental health. Rotary Rodeo Benefits Crippled Children at Owensville Fairgrounds

The Batavia Rotary Club and Clermont County Saddle Club sponsor a rodeo on September 12 at Owensville County Fairgrounds. Proceeds support Lake Allyn for Crippled Children. The Mt. Carmel-Glenn Este School opens Tuesday September 3 at 9 a m for pupil registration. Sessions run 9 to 11 30 a m on opening day and Wednesday with full day sessions and cafeteria service thereafter. Birth certificate required for first grade enrollment. Owensville public schools will not open until September 9 due to extensive painting and decorating. Superintendent J. W. Evans says the past custom of opening after Labor Day is overridden this year to complete work before classes begin.
