Fitzwater Fire devastates Main and Front grocery store

A blaze at 2 a m last Thursday destroyed the Fitzwater Bros. grocery and hardware building on Main and Front streets. Indications point to incendiarism. A reward of about 300 is offered for the arsonist. The fire exposed equipment failures and a keg of powder stored inside, prompting calls for a volunteer fire company and safer storage practices.

The House of Hartman Old Pioneer Family Reunion

A reunion of Hartman Roudebush Pages McAdams Brickers and Hutchinson descendants of an emigrant family from central Germany to America is described. Speakers included C. J. Hartman and Rep. Holmes. Williamsburg bands provided music. next meeting planned for August 1800 in Williamsburg.

Goshen Defeats Batavia in Weekend Baseball Game

On Goshen grounds, Goshen defeated Batavia with a 9 to 4 score after a mid game rush. Key plays included a home run by s Burger and hits by Holmes Sprague and Leever. Umpire Brunaugh officiated. The Marathons and Amelias are set to play on Batavia grounds next Saturday.

Seven Foot Blacksnake Killed by Lindale Man

A large blacksnake terrorizing Lindale residents for years was found hanging from a tree limb last Saturday and killed by Jacob Denham. The reptile measured seven feet. Nearby notes discuss deafness cures and announcements from F. J. Eney Co offering remedies for catarrh with circulars.

Batavia Democrats Name Delegates for Dayton Convention

In Clermont county Batavia hosts a Democratic gathering selecting delegates and alternates to the Dayton convention. County Vets Convention Opens in Batavia

A large gathering of army veterans met in Batavia on Saturday for business and social time. Dr Morris chaired and W H Fagley served as secretary. Captain David Thomas and Comrade Atwood resigned, Col Howard became president, with W H Fagley as secretary for Clermont County Veteran Association. An Encampment date set for October 3 at Amelia. Kilpatrick drum corps named official drum corps. A joint committee from the Mth and County associations was formed.

Railroad contract ties Ohio and Northwestern to Court Street depot

The Ohio and Northwestern railroad company signs a three year agreement with the Cincinnati Lebanon and Northern to use the latter’s track between Idlewild and Cincinnati with depot and yard facilities. A third rail is installed and two new commuter trains begin August 11 between Cincinnati and Batavia and Cincinnati and Newtown. The Court Street depot, served by the Walnut Hills cable road, is described as highly convenient with frequent service.

Everett Corbin Heard From After Dakota Report

Mr Shadrach Corbin of this town received a letter from Gen Corbin Chicago last week stating Everett had been heard from and was on his way to Dakota. The General telegraphed to parties on the line to secure and care for him until arrangements for removal to Chicago. The anxiety of his parents is greatly relieved and it is probable he will be safe with friends in Chicago.

Special train to Conquest of Mexico show in Cincinnati

The Ohio and Northwestern railroad runs a late night special from Cincinnati at 11:id p.m. on Saturday August 24 after the exhibition. Very low rates include admission and aim to give Batavia residents and Clement county citizens a pleasant campus visit. The spectacle is described as grander than ancient empires and a premier attraction this year.

Thief Breaks Into Williamsburg Home During Absence

Mrs Evaliné Van Horn of Williamsburg reports a window entry while she attended church last Sunday. A pocket book with 11 dollars was stolen and the book dropped on the floor. The widow laments the loss and notes the thief appeared familiar with the premises.

Thomas M. Dill of Lockland was sent to the Cincinnati work house for 26 June for drunkenness and abusing family. Despite education and refinement, his decline is attributed to excessive drinking.
