Clermont Lady Missing After Shipwreck Off Brazil Coast

The Wilmington Journal reports Miss Emma Combs of Clermont County aboard a New York to Buenos Aires vessel that caught fire July 3 off Bahia Brazil. The ship carried cotton and rum and most passengers were rescued. a Chattanooga minister aboard said the vessel was lost but he was safe at Bahia. Authorities hope all passengers, including Combs, survived and await further news.

Aged Utopia resident recalls coronation bugle tale

John Cheyne, longtime resident of Utopia and former barracks band member, owns a brass bugle that sounded the revielle for the Yeomanry of the Guard during Queen Victoria's 1837 coronation. The instrument by Robert Douglas sits in Columbus. Cheyne, now 74, arrived in America in 1841 and has lived in Utopia for 37 years as a house and sign painter.

Compulsory Education Law Takes Effect January 1 1900

The Portsmouth Tribune outlines the new compulsory education law. It requires children aged 5 to 14 to attend at least twenty weeks annually.
