A telegram from Secretary Hyde announces reduced railroad rates for movement of hay feed water and livestock amid drought. County Agents in drought areas certify permits. Clermont County feeders and adjoining counties may obtain permits via the County Agent in Batavia. Reduced rates valid through October 31.
Burglars entered the Mt. Holly post office last Wednesday night and stole twenty one dollars and ninety cents from the safe along with auto tires and cigars. Postmaster Olin Fagin and his wife were asleep when the entry occurred. Sheriff Roberts and Deputy Meinken investigated but no clue was found. The theft happened after midnight as the couple retired.
Two murder trials are scheduled in Batavia for September. State of Ohio vs Bird Sharp of Goshen faces a first degree murder charge in the Sweeny case with 75 jurors drawn. State of Ohio vs William Henderson Boshear of Cincinnati, for the Spencer killing, has a September 15 date and a separate 75-name jury pool. Both defendants remain in Clermont County jail with guards, and local officials are ready for trial.
Bankers of Clermont county held a meeting at the First National Bank last Thursday evening to discuss banking matters. Only part of the association was present and the regular meeting is scheduled for October when reports and general interest topics will be taken up.
Thomas O Maley, an elderly, respected resident and longtime N. & W. RB. R. employee, suffered a third paralytic stroke last week leaving him nearly helpless.
The Rauscher oil station built two years ago near the N and W depot in Batavia is being razed and moved after fire damage in the spring. Located on railroad ground, the company sought possession of the site regarded as a convenient public stand.
Will Brown born and raised on the Brown homestead below Batavia died Sunday evening after a monthslong illness. He was a son of J. L. Brown and a successful county farmer, a member of the K of P lodge, and well regarded. Survived by widow Emma Burger Brown, a brother, and four sisters. Funeral from his residence Wednesday at 2 pm with burial at Milford.
Inquiries on bus operations for the coming year prompt that all bus drivers must hold a driver’s certificate from the Ohio Department of State. Examinations may be taken under E. B. Jones in Milford or Joseph Williams in New Richmond. Ages 16 to 21 may drive with certification. those 16 to 18 must be in high school. The County Board of Education also requests local boards to analyze school drinking water and coordinate with Dr. C. B. Colburn for sampling and reporting.
Candidates in the August primary must file an expense account with the Batavia Ohio Board of Elections by August 22 at midnight. Filing is required regardless of spending or contributions. Noncompliance risks certification issues, referrals to the county prosecutor, and legal action. clerk E.8. Rush urges prompt action.
Advance notice states that after primaries the campaign focuses on the November 4 election. Secretary of State Clarence J. Brown will oversee rapid transmission of results to the public as counties stay in session from poll opening until all precincts report.

More than 15,000 delegates and visitors attended the American Legion Ohio Department convention at Gibson House in Cincinnati. Governor Myers Y. Cooper and Gen. Dennis E. Nolan spoke as 40 and 8 society members initiated, and the parade drew one of the largest crowds on record. Clermont County reports drought impacts on crops and hay shortages, with livestock kept in fair condition and plans to import hay to ease the supply. The Ohio Farm Bureau seeks rail rate reductions to aid farm relief amid dry weather.
The Batavia Concert Band performs Wednesday August 20 at 8 15 p m with a fine entertainment for the public. Everyone is invited to attend this community concert.
John Hayden thanks numerous friends for their earnest support of his bid for State Representative. He promises to merit the confidence shown in his behalf.
Felicity Franklin schools will open September 8 1930 with a mandatory pre enrollment day August 26 for all students. Freshmen and sophomores register at 9 am and juniors and seniors in the afternoon. Pupils should bring lists of used text books for sale or disposal and last year report cards. Seventh and eighth graders may ride the buses. grades will be departmentalized under the 6 6 plan. Local fishermen say drought has wiped out countless fish in Ohio streams and illegal removals have reduced stocks. They warn that it could take more than five years to restock with sizable fish once first rains flush polluted water into the streams.
