Judge and Mrs H L Nichols announce the Annual Red Cross Rally and Garden Party for Clermont County Chapter on Saturday evening Aug 238 for about 150 workers and friends. Dinner at six. A guest speaker from Washington DC will attend.

Cheerful Cooking Club Notes From July and August Meetings

The Cheerful Cooking Club met at Kathryn Edman’s home on July 20 with Vice President Ernestine Varney presiding. A cake judging contest judged four cakes after opening remarks and general club business. Frances Hoberg reported on August 6 at Ernestine Varney’s home with singing, roll call, secretary’s report, and a cake judging contest before adjournment.

Owensville County Fair Promises Thrills and Music

All roads lead to Owensville next week for the County Fair with full departments and a mix of free and paid amusements. Racing features fine horses, a different band each day provides music, and officials have aimed to make the event the best ever for all ages and lingering annual visits.

Heavy Rain Affects Batavia Area Last Week

All around Batavia and vicinity faced rainfall last week. Miami township saw heavy rain on Thursday causing some building and shade tree damage. East Fork rose by 18 inches toward Williamsburg but did not reach us while the creeks near town dried up. Water supply appears exhausted though East Fork still holds water in many spots.

Birthday Picnic Honors Cornwell Family at Buxton Farm

A birthday picnic hosted by Mr and Mrs Earl Cornwell of Brazier Station was held Sunday in the Buxton farm grove. It honored Mr Cornwells father and Miss Fannie Buxton with many others sharing birthdays that day. About 100 guests enjoyed the food and cheerful gathering.

Four Hurt In Route 60 Car Crash Near Stonelick

A car carrying two men and two women veered off Route 60 near a Stonelick bridge last Thursday around 10 pm. The vehicle went over the bank into a field. All occupants suffered cuts and bruises and were treated at Dr. Rapp’s in Owensville. They refused to reveal identities or destinations, suggesting an unknown observer presence.

No Picture Show Closes In Batavia

Batavia loses a cinema after owner Mr. Robinson closed the show house last week. The venture failed as talkies and silent pictures did not attract enough patrons and Sunday screenings faced opposition. The community must now seek amusement elsewhere.

Hillsboro Districts Seek State Aid for Schools

Applications have been filed with the State Department of Education by all county school districts requesting financial aid to operate their schools for another year.

New Cement Bridge Planned for Williamsburg Route

Williamsburg plans a new cement bridge to replace the aging covered bridge from 1864 on the 74 Cincinnati to Portsmouth route. One span design with heavy balustrades and a possible foot passage replaces the old structure as state crews photograph it before detours are named. Bus lines may suffer without transfers.

Ohio Chamber holds drought conference in Columbus

A large Ohio Chamber of Commerce meeting in Columbus addressed drought impacts on farmers. Speakers called for immediate livestock water, credit to prevent asset sales, affordable seed and fertilizer, and cheaper roughage transport. A general committee chaired by Frank B. McMillin will study relief measures.

Farm Notes at Clermont County Fair Highlight 4-H

Nearly 300 boys and girls in 4-H Clubs will display clothing, food, and other projects at the Clermont County Fair. Free passes and $600 in prizes accompany club participation. Tobacco group members will showcase in Ripley with a regional show and auction for Brown, Adams, Highland and Clermont counties. Attendees from Akron and other places attended a funeral for Mrs Wasner and others.

Batavia Sewer Extension Planned to Reach Creek

The Batavia town sewer, which drains into Hast Fork at North Street, will be extended into the creek below town. An engineer will soon study the project and present an estimated cost to the town council. Citizens complain of odor where the sewer empties, worsened by low water and lack of flushing for weeks.

A Cincinnati survey shows Ohio farmers especially tenants endure the driest period in state history. Prolonged drought and heat shrink crops, force many to abandon farms or depend on relief.
