Chilo Soldier Wins Bronze Star for Normandy Service
Sergeant Oscar N. Leinendecker of Route 3 Chile Ohio receives the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement against the enemy in Normandy. He served with the Ninth Infantry Division under Major General Manton S. Eddy and earlier fought in North Africa and the Tunisian and Sicilian campaigns. He wears the European Africa Mediterranean Campaign Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Sargeant William L. Smith of Batavia Ohio with Rt No 4 Batavia receives the Good Conduct Medal at Twelfth Air Force Headquarters in Italy. He served with a B 25 Mitchell bomber unit in the Mediterranean campaign and has flown over 400 missions in a year and a half of combat. He and his crew were among the first to bomb the Italian mainland and operate from an Italian base, also the first to bomb the Balkans.

Herman K. Freeman, son of Mrs Emma K. Freeman, has been promoted to captain in Italy where he commands a fighter squadron. Since June 1943 he has completed 136 combat missions in Sicily, Anzio, and Italian campaigns. He flew P-40s and now pilots a P-47 Thunderbolt and bailed out safely over the sea after flak damaged his plane. He was credited in dispatches at Anzio with the probable drowning of an enemy. Freeman is a graduate.

PFC Harold A. Emery of Batavia recounts his Marine corps experiences on the Marshalls. He survived brain concussion and nervous shock after a bomb exploded near him, witnessing a close buddy killed and a lieutenant wounded. Emery later traveled to Hawaii and San Diego for convalescence and met old friends during hospital visits.
