Prisoners At Large Escape Probed As Sheriff Trips Prove Fruitless

Four prisoners escaped from the county jail via a ventilator and blanket rope. Sheriff Auxier and a deputy hunt in Virginia failed to locate them, amid criticism of the jail, extra deputies, and an earlier escape. A Batavia bridge project faced delays from a late lumber contractor before completion by Pringle Construction.

Clermont County Tennis Tournament Opens at Burke Park

The annual Clermont County Tennis Tournament began at Burke Park Bethel on Monday with seven singles matches decided. Play runs every evening through August 24 starting at 4 PM. Over sixty players from across the county entered. Bull Gores Farmer in Tate Township

Walter Bee a leading Jersey cattle owner and Clermont Dairy operator in Tate township was gored by a bull on Friday afternoon. He was handling the animal without a staff when the attack struck in the groin and arm. A collie dog likely saved his life. Dr Davison treated him at the scene and he was sent to hospital in serious condition.

Clermont County Fair Opens With Diverse Attractions

The Clermont County Fair opened its gates on Tuesday with full departments and grand plans. Highlights include excellent ring shows, high class racing, appealing Floral Hall and Quilt Show, a robust dining hall, and livestock displays. Daily music features the County School Band, Clermont County Band, and Mt. Crab Band across the week.

Miss Elizabeth Burgett and Mr. Larry Smith united in marriage August fifth at 4 30 in Laurel Community Church with Dr George of Wilmington and Rev Harmer officiating. Rail line sparks drive to improve crossing safety

Norfolk and Western Railway reports spending over 700000 on wigwag signals and protection at grade crossings. It notes 18 percent of its 1982 crossing accidents were caused by autos colliding with trains and 148 vehicles breached lowered gates. It argues solutions depend on drivers and the public.

Clermonters named E. C. Manning of Bethel appointed Clermont County Appraiser and Harry McKeever of Williamsburg named attorney for the Home Owners Loan Corporation. Gas Find Near Ellsberry Brown County

State highway workers drilling for a water well at the Brown County stone quarry struck a natural gas vein at 127 feet. When ignited the flame rose six and a half feet from a five inch pipe before being quenched. Further tests may follow, reported division engineer G M Anderson.

Four Bills Ready Details in Ohio Special Session

Governor White announced four tax bills to fund poor relief would be introduced in the August 16 special session. After talks with House and Senate leaders he did not reveal specifics and rejected a stock transfer tax as economically unjustified. Carlton Dargusch of the State Tax Commission is examining a utilities excise tax. federal electricity tax remains at three percent for industrial use.

Milk Producers Night Says State and National Officials Weigh Pool

Last Friday night a Batavia meeting of milk producers yielded optimistic reports. Today state and national officials plan a meeting to decide on the pool question. The pool price is expected to provide producers a reasonable profit above cost. Producers await the pools report.

New School Superintendent Named for Moscow School

Paul G. Miranda of Hamersville was hired last week as Moscow School’s new superintendent replacing the retiring Carl G. Pemberton. Miranda comes well recommended from teaching posts in Owensville Newtonsville and Loveland, while Pemberton ends a very satisfactory tenure on the retirement list.

School Bus Drivers Salary Rules and Licensing

The State aid district has not yet mailed salary schedules for school bus drivers to counties. Existing drivers must be paid per those schedules when received. Boards may insure drivers if desired. A new law requires each driver to hold a chauffeur license, including substitutes, and the County Board will revoke any certificate if an unlicensed person operates a bus.

Farmers in Clermont County to figure wheat allotments

The plan uses three year base yields 1930 1931 1932 combined then averaged and reduced by a sequence of multipliers 54 percent 7 percent and 71 percent to determine individual farm allotments. The process aims to raise payments for farmers with higher yields and larger allotments.

Clermont County Day at the Cincinnati Zoo on Friday August 25 grows with a designated picnic area for locals and basket lunches. Forty children from Xenia’s Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Home will join the Legion, followed by a Woodlawn Theatre elephant show at 3 pm and a Clermont County Band concert.
