Early in August 1889 the Union Chapel M E Sunday school group gathered for a church picnic at the woods opposite the Duckwall tobacco barn. Baskets held jugs and eggs, milk, sugar and coffee. milk from local stock and ice cream were prepared as families enjoyed games and croquet while tea and lemonade were made.

A West Union dispatch reports on Thursday several locals were injured in accidents. Maggie McClelland suffered serious leg and spinal injuries. Frank Seaman Jr. fractured a leg.
