Immense preparations for what is billed as the grandest Boston Fair yet. The grounds, amphitheater, speed ring, and floral hall are arranged for comfort and display. Dates are September 1 to 5 with racing two per day, music from county bands, and a $100 prize for best band. Farmers hope for record stock and premium buggy awards.
The report lists compensation for census enumerators across Clermont County. Top pay went to F K Lansdale of Stonelick and the lowest to J M Foster of North Wayne at 27.87 dollars. Totals and district names presented reflect payments for rural townships villages and precincts with several figures in the range of 40 to 90 dollars.
LOOKING UP August 9 reports Walker Warehouse Cincinnati shows open market with liberal two week receipts and strong prices. Best hogshead 804 cents. week progresses from advance to heavy offerings causing mixed tone. Crop prospects unfavorable with local showers. annual yield may reach 50 to 75 percent with favorable rains, else not. Old tobaccos scarce, quotations omitted. Week totals show 2,434 hhds receipts and 2,250 bhds actual sales. Also advertises Simmons Liver Regulator for liver health across several dates and locations.
A county table lists all local post offices with quarterly figures ending March 31 1890 and notes yearly estimates by multiplying by four. The Batavia office lacks stamp data due to its Presidential status. The piece then reviews a lengthy county teachers institute in Felicity Felicity Aug 6 7 8 11 12 with daily sessions music, lectures, arithmetic and language lessons, prize medals, and total enrollment of 365 by week’s end. The narrative covers speakers Supt Houck Cross Unthank and Miss Robb with multiple performances and committee appointments, concluding with a fifth page continuation promised.
Society notices invite attendance at a lawn fete on the grounds of the M. E. church in Mt. Pisgah on August 14. A picnic is planned at Barry's Grove near High Bridge on Thursday the 14th. Mr. and Mrs James R Hicks of Amelia hosted last Tuesday evening for Mrs Clarence Shipp and Miss Carrie Carley of Alabama.
Obituary notes the death of Mrs Sarah A Talley Hook of Batavia born 1853 daughter of H N and Martha Talley. After marriage to Z T Hook she lived in Xenia Ohio. She leaves husband a son six, brother F F Talley and many friends, funeral at 3 30 today from Mrs Mary H Swing residence. May she rest in a fairer land. A separate notice advertises Simmons Liver Regulator for dyspepsia and liver disease.
A. M. Dimmitt found two era documents among J. M. Dimmitt’s papers. One is a December 20, 1834 militia captain commission for John M. Dimmitt signed by Governor Robert Lucas and Secretary B. Hinkson. The other is a parchment Masonic traveling card from Felicity lodge No. 142 dated November 1, 1842 with several officers’ signatures.
After a Saturday storm a valuable horse owned by Samuel DaChemin of Monterey was struck by lightning and fatally injured. The owner attempted to end the horse’s misery. his gun burst, wounding and singeing his face and risking his sight.
Amelias win the county championship by beating Milford 5 to 4 after ninth inning drama. A second Amelia game vs Irons ends 1 to 0 with White pitching well. Milford responds to Goshen claims with a heated letter from Milford Base Ball Club defending their play and challenging Goshen to a county match outside Goshen and Milford. Loveland defeats Camp Ground 15 to 0 last Friday.
The 79th regiment reunion was held last Tuesday at Clement grove in Warren county. Veterans from Clermont, Warren and Clinton counties attended to recall service in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas. Capt West led the sharp shooters unit with about fifty men. Speeches by Melville Hays, Ross and Dean followed an excellent dinner.
Eugene Huff and Charles Vanvlett, summer boarders with Charles Kirgan in a Hamlet, were in a heated quarrel. Hutt, about 18, drew a table knife and slashed Vancleft, injuring him but not fatally. A warrant for cutting with intent to kill was sworn by Vancleft, but service failed due to Huff’s sudden departure. Vanlof is Huff’s nephew.
A party of ladies Miss Neve lie and Miss Kate Tetdman and Ollie Fagin guest of Mrs D A Fagin Mt Holly started by buggy for Nicholsville. On a bridge the conveyance broke down throwing the party out. The horse’s gentleness saved them from a deadly fall from the high bridge with only minor bruises.
Robbers entered Elmer Hulick’s home last Thursday night and stole clothing and money from his inside pocket while concealing a larger sum. They fled after household movements alarmed residents. Other nearby homes were hit. Frank Moore was arrested next morning and bound over to the grand jury in 500 dollars. Police expect Moore’s arrest to help capture the rest of the gang.
