Films updated for summer viewing by William Haggerty

William Haggerty offers a mid-summer update on films shown around town. E.T. endures as a sci fi celebration of cooperation. Return of the Jedi remains a blockbuster with impressive effects. Tender Mercies features Robert Duvall in a redemption tale. Tootsie tops as last year’s hit with Hoffman’s gender journey. Local Hero leaves audiences uplifted. Betrayal adapts Pinter for the screen as a tense marital drama. Sophie’s Choice showcases Streep’s Oscar worthy performance. Gandhi presents a lengthy yet essential look at a global figure, with Kingsley shining. Valley Girl narrates star crossed romance in LA. Blue Thunder delivers action, despite a thin plot.
