County jail study weighs 196 bed plan and renovations
A jail study panel reviews a 196 bed facility with a mess hall and expanded law enforcement wing, plus a second floor. Renovating the old jail for 12 prisoners or holding cells is deemed impractical to meet 1978 federal orders and new state codes. The group also weighs growth projections to 1990 and funding constraints within the county debt limit.

Clermont County Agrees to Tax to Fund New Jail Project
Business leaders and officials in Clermont County moved to back a half percent piggyback sales tax aimed at funding a new jail. A federal court order requires a facility by July 1, 1985. Some opponents considered a referendum, but after a meeting with Prosecutor Pattison and Commissioner Carlier, most backed the tax as the only alternative to higher property taxes. Ed Parish organized the briefing, and Batavia businessman Don Ward said support would grow as opponents receded. Parish noted the chamber prepared referendum materials, but no pursuit has followed the meeting.
