Business leaders and officials in Clermont County moved to back a half percent piggyback sales tax aimed at funding a new jail. A federal court order requires a facility by July 1, 1985. Some opponents considered a referendum, but after a meeting with Prosecutor Pattison and Commissioner Carlier, most backed the tax as the only alternative to higher property taxes. Ed Parish organized the briefing, and Batavia businessman Don Ward said support would grow as opponents receded.
