Blind broommaker Ted Davis offers live demonstrations at Clermont County Fair

Ted Davis of Mount Carmel, a renowned blind broommaker, prepares 16 dozen brooms and a line of maps for sale at a fair booth sponsored by the Fair Board, Batavia Rotary Club, and The Courier. Rotary volunteers will move equipment to the fair, and Davis will show each step of broom making, with sales to follow. He also masters a new chaircaning technique to restore antique chairs, hoping to draw both old customers and newcomers.

Squirrel Migration Haunts Clermont County in 1848

The Courier report recounts a famed 1848 squirrel migration that spanned Kentucky to Ohio and alarmed farmers. Quoted by Charles B. Lewis on July 1, 1885, the tale notes boys killed many upon arrival while some escaped to devastate crops. John Moore the deer slayer, born 1805, is cited as one of the day rate shooters.

Batavia Man Breeds Prizewinners in Poultry Shows

Robert Dorsey of Batavia, 37, has bred 15 poultry breeds over 15 years and shown at thirteen fairs this year earning fifty ribbons at the Jackson County Fair Wellston. His birds include Black Minorca White Wyandotte Rhode Island Red and Buff Orpington. He plans to exhibit at Cler mont County Centennial Fair and several towns while selling breeders and spring hatching eggs.

Felicity resident Fred Redman, 174, died Saturday in the office of Dr. John Zettel Jr. at the Enquirer Building. He was pronounced dead on arrival at General Hospital after accompany from his daughter and wife during treatment for a heart ailment.

An old covered bridge over East Fork on State Route 286 near Marathon collapsed Monday evening when a lime truck drove onto it. Driver Donald Seibert escaped with minor injuries. The bridge, a long-standing Clermont County link completed circa 1861, carried horse drawn and later motor traffic.
