Centennial Clermont County Fair Opens Under Fine Weather
A long anticipated centennial fair in Clermont County opens with hundreds of club members preparing booths and displays. Governor Laucie is expected Thursday evening to attend, while Batavia Rotary helps Ted Davis set up his broom shop at Grange Hall for daily demonstrations. The event runs three more days before Saturday night’s close. Local anglers Ed and Katherine Horne just completed a cross country 10100 mile trip visiting 26 states and all West National Parks. Ed notes multiple large catches in recent seasons with a 37 pounder and several 18 to 14 pound fish, and a fish fry at Ernie Horne’s Perintown home highlights community celebration.

Fatal Electric Shock Kills Soldier While On Furlough
Private Carroll Weatherspoon 19 of Bethel died after an electric shock while working on a car in his garage at 251 South Main Street. His brother Forest 22 aided him. rain-soaked floor worsened the shock. He had been on furlough from Korea and was to return to Camp Dix, New Jersey, next Monday. Raymond Ernst Arrested for Liquor Charge Near Bethel
Raymond Ernst proprietor of the Silver Barn on State Route 125 near Bethel faces a hearing August 19 before Mayor Allan Rettlinger of New Richmond on a liquor license violation. Arrested Friday night by three Ohio State Liquor Board officials, he is free on a $500 bond after weekend jail time in Clermont County. This is his second arrest for selling liquor without a license, with Deputy Sheriff Marvin Bisantz previously making the arrest.

Missing Goshen Girls Found Safe at Home
Two thirteen year old Goshen girls Shir ley Craig and Betty Ruth Craig who had been reported missing since Tuesday night are now safe at home with their parents. Betty Ruth’s mother said the girls wandered in the woods on a nearby farm.

Two Clermont Boys Selected to Play at Ohio State Fair
Two Clermont County youths Billy McKee 15 Williamsburg and Richard Meulenhard 17 Milford were selected for the All Ohio Boys Band at the Ohio State Fair. Both slide trombone players will travel to Columbus for six hours of daily rehearsals the week before the fair. Billy, a Williamsburg sophomore, has performed at Capital University contest and with the Williamsburg town band. Richard, a Milford senior, studies voice and plays baritone horn and plans a trombone career, already with a Cincinnati band.

Men Fined For Out of Season Squirrel Hunting
Edgar Anstaett of Clermont County and others charged in Clinton and Warren counties arrested Yancy Miller and Warnie Miller for hunting squirrels out of season near Edenton. In Milford Justice W D Saunders presided and each was fined $200 plus $5.20 costs.

Spurned suitor shoots himself after rejection at friend’s home
Andrew Waldren, 46, a Norfolk and Western trackman, died after a self-inflicted gunshot in the kitchen of Mrs. Eleanor Davis, 43, at 6655 Palmetto Avenue, Madisonville. Davis fled to a neighbor’s home. Waldren had followed her and again fired at her before dying at General Hospital. Davis said Waldren sought marriage for years and had previously threatened her after a prior proposal rejection.

Railroad Station To Close Saturdays
The Batavia station of the Norfolk and Western Railroad will close on Saturdays starting September 1, 1949.
