Two Cousins Drown In Stonelick Creek

Two ten year old cousins Lawrence Wagner and James Yeager drowned after playing along Stonelick Creek near Stonelick Williams Corner Rd. They were found unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene. Funeral arrangements and survivors are noted for both families.

Michael Matthews Killed Riding Bicycle in Milford Crash

Michael Matthews age 14 died after being struck by a car on Ohio 28 while biking with friend Mike Sentker in Milford. George Jones, 19, drove the vehicle. Sentker was unharmed. Sheriff’s office investigated. Michael sent to Monroe-Copher funeral home. Jones treated for shock. Surviving family includes parents Mr and Mrs Clifford Matthews and sister Mrs Melva Hurt. Requiem high mass planned at St Andrew’s Milford with burial at Union Township Cemetery.

Registration Set For New Students At Northeastern

Owensville area notices registration for Northeastern Schools new students. Dates span Aug 9 to 11 with times 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Contacts list principals and phone numbers. First day of school is Sept 6. In a separate item, 23 large truck scales were tested in Clermont County with 14 sealed, 6 condemned, and 3 not in use. Damaged scales must be repaired within ten days.

Clermont County Fair Opens August 15 In Owensville

The 118th Clermont County Fair begins Tuesday August 15 at Owensville with gates at 9 a.m. Five days of exhibits and entertainment follow through August 19. A new cattle barn 105 by 48 feet built by Tom Crain of London replaces last year’s damaged structure at a cost of 6500. Highlights include 4 H horse show rabbit and cattle judging free tractor pulling for seniors opening day, All-Ohio Youth Choir, dairy art racing and the Rotroff Show with a grand parade final day and ice sculpture on the midway.

Batavia Names Superintendent Robert R. Lambert

Robert R. Lambert of Oxford has been named superintendent for Batavia Local Schools. A Miami University graduate with a 1960 master’s degree, he has held roles from executive head of Belle Valley Schools to high school principal in Byesville and Ross, and served as research director for SCOPE in Dayton before joining the Batavia post. He has led or participated in multiple education associations and committees across Noble and surrounding counties.

Batavia Families Host Peace Corps Trainees

Six Peace Corps trainees, college juniors preparing for work in Bolivia, are hosted by Batavia families this week. They study five hours daily and assist with a CAC health survey, spending two weeks in Yellow Springs before returning home. Guests include Oscar Bustillos, Steve McCandless, Marsha Tannen, Kazuo Tashiro, Thomas Barnes, Myrna Spisleman, and others from Oberlin, Utah, and Rhode Island.
