The Batavia new school building is nearing completion with brick work finished and carpenters plumbers heating and painters at work. Eveland says the building will be ready to turn over to the board by September first. The new garage brick work is done and cement workers will cover the large floor space for completion by Sept 1.
Wheat yield is projected at 70 percent of normal with 1,577,352 harvested acres and about 16,662,196 bushels. Oats, corn, potatoes, and pastures suffer from drought. Hessian fly infestation is uncommon, with farmers advised to sow in fall and Bulletin 298 from Wooster Experiment Station outlining seeding times and practices.
Lydia Virginia Maham wife of Mar iain Mabam died at her Afton home last Wednesday morning at age 70. A life long resident, funeral at Afton M E Church Friday at 10 burial in Williamsburg. She leaves husband James Maham of Afton and daughter Mrs E T Smith of Batavia.
Joe Coslett of Afton lost his sanitary chicken house to a lightning strike last Thursday night. The building and a number of his thoroughbred fowls were totally destroyed. Sanitary henches are rare but seen as a success and more will be built as chicken prices rise.
Laborers are scarce in Batavia with contractors facing a serious proposition to recruit help. In Columbus several contracts are stalled due to lack of workers as $2.50 per day and up are offered. The National Guards and machine industry have drawn many available men. Mr and Mrs J L Johnson recently visited friends in Wilmington.
Receiver Wagner of the First National Bank of New Richmond announces a second dividend of 10 percent. Checks have been mailed from Washington and will be sent to claimants. About $25,000 will be paid in this dividend, part of total $192,000 in claims. $62,000 of those were secured and paid.
Moscow on the Ohio river, a town of about 700, plans a September 2 1916 centennial celebration. The program will include speakers, music, and readings on the town’s history and settlers. Former residents will be notified to attend from near and far.
H J Thomas D and A J McIntire R chair a liquor board that granted Tom ONeil a license to open a saloon in Manester township. The unit is deemed wet with 22 voters. Adams county voted dry in 1908 and an election can be held after January 6 1917 per the Ripley Bee report.
Farmers report very small yields overall with hogs fed on surplus grain. L. B. Boyd and Ed King of Highland county are said to have the state’s best yield, with 28 acres averaging just under 80 bushels per acre at 62 pounds per bushel.
Lebanon council voted last week to issue 20000 in bonds to erect a sewage disposal plant as required by state sanitation laws. The move aims to ensure proper sanitation in the town.
Mrs Geo Treton hosted the Sunshine Club on Thursday August 8 with several members absent due to death and the president Mrs Anna Walker visiting in Denver. The program included a solo by Mia Goldie Curry responses on kitchen help current topics a paper by Farm Women Mrs Mc Kever an original poem Jim's Awak ing and Maude Ireton. Ice cream and cake were served.

The G A R Encampment of Clermont county held at Highland Park last Thursday with a large crowd and praised music by the Boy Scout Band. Olive Branch M E church ladies served a chicken dinner for 35 cents. Hon C C Kearns spoke on Preparedness. new officers appointed: E B Scott commander, W W Eppert Jr vice, Bart Applegate adjutant, Frank Stahl quartermaster, Tom Moore head officer of the day. The next meeting is planned for September at the Boston fair grounds.
The 16th annual Smith family reunion occurred Sunday August 6 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Smith. About 96 relatives attended, roughly half the clan, with many arriving by truck and machine from Middletown East End Tabasco Tusculum Price Hill and East Walnut Hills. Guests enjoyed dinner served under the trees in the Smith yard.
The annual Sunday school celebration will be held at Simmon's grove in Laurel on August 12 at 10 a.m. Monroe and adjoining townships are invited to sing. the largest school will be photographed, Laurel excepted. Miss Lottie Elmer and Frank Schiseller of Cincinnati married in Covington last Saturday and will reside in Batavia with many friends sending best wishes.
The one year old son of Wilbur Dunlap, an Elbinger Shoe factory worker, was struck by a freight train near his West Street home. Found by his mother on the cattle racks, the child had facial cuts and body bruises but no broken bones. The incident remains unexplained as neither engineer nor fireman saw the boy.
The Boston Fair organizers in southern Ohio announce major grounds improvements and a full amusements lineup including a merry-go-round. Exhibits in floral, mechanical and art halls will be displayed while blood horse races promise exciting competition. Secretary J. E. Christy confirms questions and urges attendees to bring friends.
Highland county teachers gather at Hillsboro for the annual institute under the County Board of Education. The paper corrects a previous item by moving the word colored from Chas A Moore of Indiana and Lucy M Trout of Amelia to the proper announcement. It states the earlier placement was a mistake and the word belongs elsewhere.

A Williamsburg light plant was hit by a storm last Thursday night and disrupted service briefly. Workers responded quickly after the weather cleared and restored power to residents as heavy rain accompanied the strike.
The German U. B. church youth group hosts a lawn fete on Saturday afternoon and evening from 8 to 9 at the court house yard. About 800 tickets sold. one ticket covers ice cream and cake or 10 cents of other refreshments. High School orchestra to perform in the evening.
The state pike joining Bethel corporation limits is nearly finished after two years of work and will soon be surfaced. A mile further beyond Bethel is planned, affecting traffic for the rest of the season. The Batavia Olive Branch pike has been under construction almost three years and remains incomplete.
An old fashioned colored camp meeting was held last Sunday in Jones Grove above Batavia with a large crowd from New Richmond Milford and Cincinnati. Several good sermons were delivered supported by excellent music.
Speeders in Hamilton county were nabbed last week by gum shoe constables placed on four roads leading out of Cincinnati. Drivers exceeding the 35 second per quarter mile limit were brought before Squire Repport in the auto and fined $8.40. The watchful officers used stop watches to time violations and forward notices to the next constable.
August is the best time to cut weeds along roads fences and in meadows and pastures. Remove weed seedings from meadows and avoid competition with new seedings for water and nutrients. Frequent early cuts reduce briars pests like horsenettle and Canada thistle require two cuttings a month through two seasons.
At Horseman s Crossing south of Wilmington the Ford carrying five people was hit by a late Pittsburg flyer. Three in the car died instantly including Mrs Porter D Moore 34 of Crosby Tenn Mrs George Moore 85 of Chester township Clinton county and Ida Faye Moore 18 months old. Thomas Moore 35 of Clinton county is not expected to live and Porter Moore of Crosby Tenn is slightly injured and likely to recover. Accidents are rare in Batavia area amid alleged reckless driving.
Farmers in southern Ohio especially Ross county fear loss of corn to a mysterious plant disease or new insect. Corn is turning yellow and lodging across various soils including Paint Creek bottoms. Investigations underway with no solution yet. Auto incident near Batavia last Friday left Allen Hauck and friends with a damaged car after skidding against a bank. Hauck bought a replacement wheel in the city. Time is money yet time can be costly in the end.
The Dr. McMillan homestead at the head of Wood street changed hands last week after 50 years in the family. Jas A Daugherty of Coyington Kentucky purchased it and plans to make his home there. He intends to build a modern house and overhaul the property.
Webster Crawford a former Batavia spur conductor and brother in law of Chas Mitchell saw his barn near Hamersville strike by lightning on Thursday night. The fire consumed the barn with a new automobile and farming utensils totaling a loss with no insurance.
A man stolen from Cincinnati drove to Ripley and sold the machine for little money. Suspicion arose and he refunded the money when officials arrested him on suspicion. He was turned over to city authorities for further action.
The Odd Fellows of the 74th Ohio district will meet in Sardinia on Thursday August 17 for a grand reunion with grand officers present and speakers to advance Odd Fellowship. The day promises pleasure and profit and invites families to attend.
Prices for Fords fall to 360 dollars for touring cars and 345 dollars for roadsters drawing wide attention as people consider purchasing cars during the hot season. The reduction spurs enthusiasm and frequent discussion about autos in the community.
Liberty Ind resident S H Heistand aged 92 married Clarksville Indiana native Mary Stratton aged 82 in Wilmington. The couple appeared youthful at their wedding and drew hundreds of onlookers at the Walker restaurant where they shared a joyful meal and large crowds watched the scene like a Sweet Sixteen celebration.
A strange bee disease is devastating bees in parts of Ohio causing sudden inactivity confusion and death among honey bees. Federal bee expert Dr E F Phillips visited Ohio last Friday to inspect with State inspector N E Shaw as losses rise after one of the best honey seasons in the region.
The boys of the First and Seventh regiments O. N. G. prepare for a two week camp around August 16 not covered by the President’s call to duty. Non commissioned officers will assemble at Camp Proctor for a week prior for instruction.
James M Hess and wife of Martin's Ferry are parents of twenty children. The mother aged 44 and the miner father live. only eight of the twenty survive. This strains local records as a Ohio record breaker.
