After the August 7 primaries, results show uneven turnout with rural districts distant from polls and towns voting sparingly. Republicans list candidates and vote totals for governor to coroner while Democrats post figures for governor to coroner, including Mack and Cox leading in several statewide races.
Batavia promoters finalize plans for a six day Chautauqua from September 2 to 7 featuring youth events, music by The Strang Coleman Co and The Arden Players, lectures by Booth Lowrey and Nels Darling, operatic excerpts, and a grand concert series with The Chicago Artist Quartet and Bland's Chautauqua Orchestra. Season tickets offer savings with adult $2 and youths $1.
The County Board of Revision is ready for complaints and will sit in Batavia on dates listed elsewhere. Taxpayers wishing to file complaints about assessed values on personal or real property should apply to the county auditor for blanks.
Eugene Patton and Charles H. Woodmansee tied for the Democratic nomination for probate judge for the November ballot. After the unofficial count, both plans to settle the tie failed and the election board tossed copper to decide. Patton won as Woodmansee offered congratulations and goodwill.
Clermont county invites all residents to the Experiment Farm picnic on Tuesday August 22. Fore noon will survey orchard and field. afternoon programs feature Federated Farm Women Clubs with speakers Miss Lou Connor Mrs F H Willison and Miss Treva Kauffman on farm women community home and rural school lunch work J A Boyce will discuss the Grange and Clermont County and L Lantis on community upbuilding Picnic dinners are requested for attendee enjoyment.
The Curliss Sisters from Norwood Ohio impressed Saturday audiences with superb vocal music winning praise and promising a bright future. Dr Sauer followed, stunning listeners as a top whistler and a first on the Chautauqua platform, delighting attendees. The sisters are nieces of Mrs. H. M. Rice of Brown County.
The Batavia ice plant operates at full capacity producing high quality ice in great demand. Rural factories draw from the shortage in cities, with six towns calling last Saturday for ice. Court Hill, an expert engineer, delivers reliable ice, earning patron satisfaction and community thanks.
Batavia and nearby areas endured the heaviest rain in years on Tuesday of last week. A southbound downpour overflowed sewers and gutters, turning streets into lakes, flooding cellars, uprooting trees, and damaging crops as water blocked by clogged or nonexistent openings rushed toward creeks. Effects resembled the tail end of a West Virginia storm with minimal wind or lightning.
The Batavia village bond issue to pay debts and part of Board of Public Affairs dues passed with 134 for and 96 against. The measure ends renewing notes every six months. The two third requirement not reached. another vote will be held.
The C G P announces a revised timetable within three weeks to about 160 miles daily. Higher wages for car operators and the need to remove one car drive the change. Evenings will see a car from Carrell Street around 7 p m replacing the 5 50 car. mornings start from Georgetown at 5 15 in two hour intervals. The exact plan is not fixed but the overall mileage exceeds 50 000 annually for the Cincinnati to New York run. The Batavia spur note omits how many cars will be cut to save costs.
The National Contract Company worker on river construction near New Richmond was operating a 2600 pound hammer when the frame broke. The hammer fell into the river and knocked Ben Heston and Edward from the scaffold into the water. They sustained serious injuries but no bones were broken. It was a near fatal accident with a narrow escape from death.
The Clermont Hotel changed management last week with Mr and Mrs Charles Craver moving to Owensville and Arthur QDoc Sampsom and wife of Brazier taking charge. The hotel will be papered and painted to be put in first class condition for public entertainment. The new landlords pledge hotel experience and top treatment for guests.
Merril Jenike and Miss Juiniin Isles wed quietly Monday at noon with Rev. Wegner performing the ceremony. The couple receives best wishes from many friends in Batavia.
