A column on typefaces and printing history notes Sun's new look and Courier readers' comfort. It recalls Francis Hopkinson on matching type to subject, medieval monograms, bureaucratic checks in 16th century France, and eighteenth century print shop shortages with pamphlet farming and shared errors. A subscriber mail item ends the piece.
The piece seems to rail at newspaper pressure and balancing jokes, seriousness, material gathering, and editing. It blames both printing jokes and avoiding them for readers, and laments accusations of laziness or copying from others.
Building permits issued in July totaled 119, the smallest for that month since permits were required in 1985, announced building inspector O C Mattox. The record sign was 346 in July 1959. In detail Union township had 25 one family house permits, Miami 10, Pierce 8, Stonelick 5, and Goshen 4.
Donald N. Wehrmeyer of Milford earned a place on the University of Cincinnati second-semester dean's list in the College of Pharmacy as announced by University President Dr. Walter C. Langsam.
Ralph G. Keller of Bromley Kentucky is jailed on a charge of receiving stolen tires from the Goshen Gulf Service Station. Station Manager Boyd Mahorney signed the warrant and Cincinnati police arrested Keller after spotting his car with a flat tire. Six new tires were found in the rear of the vehicle and he was turned over to Sheriff Clyde B Dericks.
Clermont County Republican Men's and Women's Clubs meet August 11 at 8 p.m. in Union township hall. Russell Simmons president of the men’s club urged area citizens to attend. After the business meeting a speaker will discuss local affairs. Refreshments and door prizes to follow.
Simon C. Nielsen, president of The Mt. Lookout Savings & Loan Co., announces mid year asset growth to 22,491,987.47 and reserves to 1,748,133.38. Six month gains total 2,035,563.34 in assets and 65,918.30 in reserves. The firm, part of the Federal Home Loan Bank System and Ohio Deposit Guarantee Fund, opened a quarter million dollar Amelia office.
Owensville announces a total budget of about 29119 for the 111th Clermont County Fair to run August 16 to 20 with 19368 to be paid out as premiums and purses across divisions including speed programs western saddle dairy cattle beef cattle and more. The fair seeks to make Ohio's best in 1960 as organizer Lew Lewis notes.
A county fair and related events loom as the Clermont County Fair opens Tuesday at 9 am for five days of shows. The program features Grange judging, horse and pony shows, 4 H exhibits, livestock and floral judging, plus concerts, auto thrill shows, variety acts, and a grand parade. A woman claiming to be Katherine Hammonds remains unidentified after a jail transfer and ongoing efforts to verify her identity. The Clermont County Humane Society plans a meeting August 5 at 7 30 pm in Batavia.
Funeral services were held for Oscar Paul Needels 24 of 1471 Denny Dr. Mt. Washington after a sewer ditch cave in at Greenland Acres Roselawn. He died Thursday from chest injuries after being pinned by concrete pipe. Robert Kay 24 Forestville suffered bruises. Both men worked for W J Needels plumbing of Forestville. Needels survived by his widow Patricia and several relatives.
Loveland 14 year old Jim Bradley was located around 5 pm Tuesday by schoolmate Ronnie Rolke after being missing since 6 pm Monday. Police say he ran away from home to shoot his air rifle, slept in a boxcar, and walked toward Loveland along railroad tracks. A large search with dogs, volunteers, and officials had been conducted.
About 60 residents and local group representatives attended an open meeting in Williamsville to discuss Attorney Paul Schuch’s six month study on incorporating Union Township into a city. Officials say no group backs immediate action, urging continued fact finding and yearlong discussion.
Bethel attorney Bud West will fill Judge Chris Rosenhoffer's county court bench from August 11 to 22 while the judge takes vacation.
Amelia residents will see a new box on their PUB Water System bills this month as two National cash register machines take over billing for water and sewer and handling ledger credits. System manager William Iles says the machines simplify operations and reduce costs by combining functions formerly done separately.
