County Engineer Carl H. Rush reports 225 miles of county highway are badly in need of repair after a severe winter and 26 bridges damaged by a March flash flood. Officials seek federal material aid to patch blacktop roads and repair bridges as funds allow amid shortages and expected gasoline tax cuts. The county total highway network spans 1009 miles across county township and state systems.

Ex Batavia Man Visits Friends in Clermont County

An educated former Batavia resident, Christian F Halbisch, returned to Clermont County last weekend to visit relatives and friends. He is the son of the late Lillian Halbisch and Christian Halbisch, once of Batavia. He lived in Chicago for over four decades and worked for the city’s civil service the last 29 years. His cousin is Judge Orville Halbisch of Clermont County Probate Court.

Memorials Honor Chief Justice Hugh L. Nichols in Columbus

In Columbus a memorial to the late Chief Justice Hugh L. Nichols of Batavia was presented with Mrs. Nichols and nephew Hugh C. Nichols in attendance. Will P. Stephenson headed the memorial committee but died before presenting it. A new committee was named to prepare a memorial for Stephenson. The Nichols record will appear in the Supreme Court reports volume 141 and court journal. Eli H. Speidel presented the report and recalled Nichols as a helpful friend to many in Clermont County.
