Grant in Clermont County on first postwar visit

Colonel Ulysses S. Grant 8rd, son of the late Major General Frederick D. Grant, visited Georgetown Bethel and Point Pleasant in Ohio on Sunday April 25 1926. He traveled with H V Speelman and a U S Grant Post Sons of Veterans committee and was greeted by local veterans and relatives at Bantam Bethel Georgetown New Richmond Batavia and Cincinnati venues.

Correction on J L Wageman’s status

In last week’s Courier we reported that J L Wageman formerly of Clermont now in Manhattan Kansas had died. We are pleased to say Mr Wageman is alive and enjoying good health for his age. He is remembered by many Clermont monters.

Loveland Commencement and Baccalaureate Details

Loveland schedules its commencement for May 28 at the Opera House with Prof. J B McMillian of Miami University as speaker. The baccalaureate sermon will also be May 28 at the Opera House by Rev. Chas Marston of the Presbyterian church. Rev Curtis Robinson Installed Pastor at Williamsburg Ohio

Arrangements are completed for the installation of Rev Curtis Robinson as pastor of the Presbyterian church in Williamsburg Ohio on May 7 at 7 30 p m. Moderator Herbert Helzlep will propound the constitutional questions and preach the sermon. Rev N R Walker, former pastor, will charge the congregation and Rev W F Lippert will charge the pastor.

The Batavia Woman's Club will meet at the home of Mrs. J. W. Homan on Saturday at 2 30. The program titled Prominent Women of Today will be discussed.

Former Batavia Lady Helen Ranson Takes Paris Librarian Post

Miss Helen Ranson, formerly of Batavia and now a librarian at the University of Minneapolis, accepts a position with the American Library in Paris France. She sails for Paris on the Mauretania May 19. Born in Batavia and a graduate of local schools, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Ranson.

German Cannon to Be Placed in Clermont County

The captured German 77mm cannon awarded to Clermont county will be erected in the Court House yard in Batavia. Gov. Donahey or Adjutant General Henderson are to attend dedication ceremonies planned with a base ready and a grand stand donation of 250 dollars from Edmund G. Burke for Bethel Park. The grand stand will seat 300 and be ready for the baseball season.

Goshen Masonic Lodge Holds Saturday Night Inspection

The Goshen Masonic lodge hosted a Saturday night inspection with 90 attendees including visitors from nearby lodges. An Entered Apprentice candidate was conferred and the year’s average attendance of 23 was praised as excellent. Refreshments by the Eastern Star followed in the township hall as Edenton lodge plans next week’s inspection.

Clermonter Honored by Merom College Trustee Appointment

Mr. A. Bagby was named a trustee of Merom College in Sullivan county Indiana, joining the institution’s leadership Tuesday, April 27. Separately a Smithsonian bulletin notes rust as oil store enemy and offers simple precautions including leaving oven doors slightly open after burners light to vent moisture and prevent condensation.

Lime Stone Quarry to Ship Limestone for Fertilizer

J B Lucas of Hamersville has optioned bluff land near Aberdeen to quarry limestone and ship it by boat to Cincinnati for crushing into fertilizer. The operation will employ a large number of workers.

Amelia Schools Baccalaureate and Commencement Events

Amelia students plan a May holiday of ceremony and music. Rev. Mr. Roberts will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at Amelia M E church on May 2. Peach Crop Fears Cloud Orchard Prospects

Early peach buds damaged by recent freezes threaten a lighter harvest though large fruit may still arrive from remaining trees. Orchard operators expect plenty for all if half the crop falls, with better quality fruit if fewer peaches mature. Saturday marks the Feast of the Apostles Philip and James.

The county board met in regular session to approve payments to suppliers and services, authorize road work and repairs, grant cyclone insurance cost sharing for Clermont Agriculture Society buildings, hire staff for road maintenance, and set special session for April 27.

Clermont County Commission to Meet Mondays in Batavia

The Clermont county commissioners will hold future weekly meetings every Monday in Batavia to handle business under the new requisition order system. The current twice monthly schedule would delay bill payments, taking five weeks to settle each bill.

Pike Work on River Road from Batavia to Stonelick

Work progresses on the river road from Batavia to Stonelick by Pringle and Buerkle contractors. The project widens the road bed, slopes banks, cuts ditches, removes obstructions, and will become a gravel surfaced route linking the county’s northern area to avoid hills. Reports claim a state plan to narrow the Williamsburg Bethel pike by two feet each side draws protest from landowners.

Williamsburg Township High to stage Dr Wake's Patient play

Williamsburg Township High School will present the senior class play Dr Wake's Patient in the school auditorium on April 28 29 with a cast including the Earl of St Olbyn Dr Forrester Wake and Lady Qernia Wyn- Charteret and music by the high school band. Commencement exercises for the class of 1926 are set for Friday April 30 with a concert invocation class address and diploma presentation by J W Smith and Reverend speakers.

May frost proverb linked to February thunder in locality

An old Dutch sign says frost in May mirrors February thunder. On February 18 thunder was clearly heard across the area, suggesting the home crop of tomatoes and potatoes may be late if this holds for eight years.

New Richmond Announces Tri-State League Baseball Team

New Richmond will field a baseball team this season in the Tri-State League. President Joe Colonel announces a fund raising motion picture show. Grounds from former seasons are being prepared. Officers are Joe Colonel president Vic Nobis vice president J F Hamilton secretary Frank Schmidt treasurer. The team was one of the fastest in southern Ohio last season.

Examination for County Normal School Entrance

An examination for prospective teachers will be held at Batavia School House on May 22 at 9 a.m. Applicants must be First Grade High School graduates with specific subjects and pay a 60 cent fee. No fall tests will be given. those interested should enter now and send names to the Clermont County Superintendent.

Poultry Club Elects Officers and Plans Schedule

The Livewire Poultry Club met at the Farm Bureau Office on April 22 and elected Louise Meier as President Pauline Caldwell as Vice President Carmen Snider as Sec Treas Selma Mefford as News Reporter Forrest Leever as Recreation leader. Regular meetings will be the first and third Thursdays in Batavia with a special officers meeting at Owensville High School on April 26.
