Southern Clermont residents urge an outlet from Bethel to the Hamilton line via the Davis pike from Hamlet to Batavia to connect county sections. With high taxes and many roads needing repair a bond vote seems unlikely, but quick maintenance could keep the road usable until a new pike is pursued.
The County Teachers' Association gathered in Batavia High School auditorium last Saturday. The program opened with a song, a America invocation by Rev. Bagby, and a spelling contest. Supt. Schwartz of Hamilton gave a well received address and the afternoon featured the Star Spangled Banner and a Departmental Program with valuable points for all teachers.
Batavia Chapter No 112 R A M holds a special meeting Saturday May 6 at 7 PM to confer the Royal Arch Degree for a class of candidates. The Past High Priest's team from Cincinnati will perform. W O Robinson High Priest Edwin Ely Secretary invite all Royal Arch Masons.
The annual meeting of the District Advisory Council will be held in Batavia on Monday May 1 at 1 30 p m Mayors of villages and each township board chairman are members and urged to attend.
Project crews begin work on the State pike from Owensville to Hillsboro with Indiana trucks arriving. Contractors report thousands of perches of stone to be mined from Backbone Run near Batavia and material from Backbone Creek mouth to be used as road fill.
A joint township conference for all Sunday schools from Wayne and Jackson townships is set for April 29 at the Newtonsville M KE church from 1 pm to 5 30 pm. Attendees include young people teachers superintendents pastors and Y P D officers with J M Small as the state worker speaker. Box lunches are requested and a social hour follows.
The Ohio river road from New Richmond to Point Pleasant is under government and state control. A large gang has worked since last Friday to ready the pike for travel next Thursday. Officials plan grading gravelling and rolling to a smooth surface for the occasion.
Instructions for attendees traveling to the Grant Centenary in Pt. Pleasant describe the best roads from Newtown via the new pike to Union Bridge and Mt. Washington then to Coney Island river road. The route passes New Richmond Front Street Woolen Mills, with mounted police directing traffic and a field parking area beyond the town.
John Swing, a prominent county figure, takes office as Bethel postmaster. Appointed by President Harding on April 4 and confirmed by the Senate on April 7, he is expected to perform well in this role.
A. P. Eveland of Miamiville now in Wilmington won last week’s contract to build a new Junior High School for 78 515 dollars. The project is to be ready by fall opening. The Board of Public Affairs reported a year running deficit of about 5 000 dollars.
A recent storm damaged property around Owensville including the fair grounds where a section of the horse stable was blown over and several trees uprooted. Officials promise the grounds will be ready by fair time and urge the public to attend a better fair than ever.
Growers report healthy tobacco beds with large plants and strong collars ready for the season. Acreage this year is expected to be large in the area, with crops expanding where none were grown last year.
A long rainy season has produced a brief oat acreage with little ground broken in many sections. Plowing lags on uplands and bottoms, and early potatoes have been planted in only a few spots.
Lebanon Star notes fans will welcome the return of baseball this season with an opening game scheduled for April 30 in Lebanon. The paper argues local teams keep youth closer to wholesome amusements than traveling elsewhere.
Wm P Richards and Dr O Davidson visited Allen Glancy in Batavia to view a life like bust of General U S Grant. The sculpture, by French sculptor Dreyfuss of New York City, was loaned for exhibition in Bethel. Glancy notes Grant posed in army uniform for a natural presentment to old veterans.
County records list payments for water light gravel repairs pike work and supplies totaling numerous amounts. Notes include government pike improvements from New Richmond to Pt Pleasant, bridge repairs and ditch cleaning near Batavia Winchester pike, and a lockjaw case of Chas Jackson the Batavia mail carrier treated in Cincinnati.
All roads lead to Point Pleasant next Thursday for the Grant Centenary with the speakers stand veterans seats and bell telephone loud speaker erected. Homes in Point Pleasant repainted and decorated while the New Richmond road graded for the event. Weather promises good day and Bethel will have its day on Friday per another column notice.
Judge H L Nichols delivered an eloquent address on the life of General Grant at the M RE Church Monday evening to a large attentive audience. He traced Grant from birth to death and spoke highly of his service and legacy. Music by the church choir accompanied the event.
The Clermont County Sunday School Association outlines the Friday to Saturday program at Batavia Methodist Church May 5 and 6 1922 including devotions addresses and divisional institutes with speakers such as Edwin F Arras Rev W G Loucks Rev J M Small and Brice Hendrixson. A banquet at the Armory is noted and Saturday sessions conclude with officer installations and reports. The same issue reports a heavy frost across Clermont County with potential damage to fruit though current estimates suggest minimal loss as cherries peaches pears strawberries currants and grapes remain well advanced.
The Williamsburg election for a bond issue set for May 10 has been canceled by the Village Council. Cincinnati based Union Gas and Electric Co will supply 24 hour current via a home company to be organized, with no construction costs to consumers and current prices unchanged. Also reported is the death by self-inflicted wounds of Dick Laughlin from Concord neighborhood, reason given as poor health. Funeral arrangements are to be held Tuesday.
Batavia mayor presided as council approved bills and an ordinance setting the electric plant superintendent's salary. Simp Griffith and Lloyd Hulick resigned. J. N. Lewis and J. L. Applegate and Ed Dumford and J. B. Wasner won new posts. Miss Clara Zurmable resigned as clerk. E. S. Rush named. Oil street work set for May and June. sewer cleaner ordered.
In Batavia the county spelling contest hosted by Batavia High School drew thirty contestants. Lulu Odoms of Milford won first with 93 percent, with Jeannette Nichols and Edith Anstaett among top finishers. The article notes school events, a baseball defeat at Owensville, and upcoming ceremonies.
