Batavia Seniors Treat Teachers To Six OClock Dinner

The Batavia high school senior class hosted a six o’clock dinner for the teachers at Mr. and Mrs. V. O. Lytle’s home last Friday. Louise Lytle, a class member, helped organize the event. Profs. Blair and See will not return next year as Blair heads to Chicago and See to study law.

Batavia High School Announces May Events And Commencement

Batavia schools schedule Exhibit and Inspection day on Friday May 19. Commencement week runs the last week of May with a garden party for Juniors on May 24 and Field and Festival Day on May 26. Commencement exercises on May 26 at 8 p.m. in the town hall feature Shakespearean themes. Memorial for General Grant Proposed by Batavia Church

Grant Memorial Church plans a sixty thousand dollar General Grant memorial in Batavia. The project includes a 19 by 19 foot memorial tower with a life size bronze statue, a bronze tablet, and a memorial to General Henry C. Corbin. It also features a memorial window for Bishop Randolph S. Foster. Rev. John P. Martin travels to New York and Saratoga Springs to promote the effort and attend events.

Obituary for Rufina Whitaker of Monterey and Cincinnati

Rufina Whitaker born August 9 1842 in Monterey Ohio died April 15 1916 in Cincinnati after a short illness aged 78. Her marriage to Thomas Whitaker produced six children seven including two who died in childhood. Survived by spouses and eight grandchildren one great grandchild and brother Andrew Willis. She was active in Monterey Christian church and fond of religious reading. Her final peace is noted with poetic references to the “Beautiful River of Rest.”

The Mothers' Meeting at Mrs. W. C. Bishop's residence honored Batavia schools' domestic science teacher Mrs. Will Keen. The reception drew a large attendance and provided a delightful afternoon with refreshments served.

Fishermen Drown In Miami River Accident Near Foster

Grant Smith and Clarence Hobson were drowned Friday while fishing from a boat on the Miami river near Foster. The boat toppled and both men failed to swim. Smith’s body was recovered quickly, Hobson’s later.

Obituary of Nancy E B Clark of Newtonsville Ohio

Nancy E B Clark born August 3 1840 in Newtonsville Ohio died April 17 1916 aged 75 years 8 months and 14 days. She left a brother Albert W Clark and four sisters Elizabeth Meek Mary E Clark Sallie Duchman and Annie William and many friends. She joined Monterey Christian church at 17 memorized Hebrews and received a Bible. She endured years of affliction yet kept faith and sang hymns daily praising Jesus. Funeral services were held at Newtonsville M B church and burial was in Plainview cemetery.

Well attended county board of education meeting in Batavia presided by H C Austman. J H Cook of Columbus spoke on Centralization and its advantages over the old system. Dr J W Hecker t of Oxford discussed educational matters and the need across districts. Dr J C Spence of Milford spoke on Standardization Consolidation and Centralization.

The Tuesday vote moved slowly with minimal engagement across the county as residents showed limited turnout and attention to the primary ballot.

Dynamite Blast Fires Dam Yard Across River

A large bulk of dynamite exploded across the river from New Richmond after a fire in storage buildings tied to a dam project. The blast shattered timbers, caused a fire scare, but no lives were lost. Damages are around $50,000 with valuable drawings burned though duplicates exist with the government.

Death of Thomas Wells A Pioneer and War Veteran

Thomas Wells born June 9 1832 near New Harmony Ohio died April 13 1896 at 83 years 10 months 4 days. He married Sarah Laughlin February 22 1854 and had six children two of whom survive with his wife four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Wells served in the Civil War with Ohio’s 10th Volunteer Infantry and was remembered as a good brave soldier and devoted husband father and neighbor.

Misfortune strikes Clermonter's family in Indiana incident

News from Batavia reports Frank Holter, a Summer side native now living near Connersville Indiana, had a 12 year old son injured by a loaded cartridge found in an alley. The cartridge exploded in his hand and eye. he was moved to Cincinnati for eye removal and now the second eye shows signs of danger.

Dynamite Accident Claims Highland County Man

George Cordey of Highland county was killed instantly when a dynamite basket exploded while he assisted Stanley Smith in stump removal. A nearby charge under a stump also exploded shortly afterward. Cordey leaves a wife and eight children.

School Meeting Discusses District Consolidation at Hartman

A citizen meeting at Hartman school house in Jackson township debated school standardization and centralization. Attendees heard from Henry Harlow and County Superintendent H C Aultman among others, and planned another gathering in Marathon on May 6 to decide on immediate actions.
