County road officials township trustees and superintendents gathered in Batavia to plan road improvements. They discussed funding via bonds up to 250000 authorized without a popular vote and will survey the county before final action.
Verner Wood of Bethel aged about 23, recently despondent, drank carbolic acid at a Lebanon shoe factory boarding house. He called his mother by phone to disclose his intentions before the act, was found unconscious, and died. Survived by father, mother, two brothers, and a sister. Services held at Bethel Baptist Church. He belonged to Company K and was well liked.
Batavia residents attended the season opener in Cincinnati last Wednesday. Several boys had bought tickets weeks in advance. The first game disappointed but improved later, fueling hope for continued success. Clermont County shows strong interest in baseball.
Logan Waits former Jamestown High School principal settled his out of court suit after being ousted by the board. He sought 540 dollars plus 5000 dollars in damages. The agreement allows a teacher to be retained if not suited but may resign if a better position is found.
Ellis Guynn of Glen Rose offers a wide selection of fruit trees and shrubs suited to the climate. Prices are reasonable and plants are expected to thrive. Garden making is delayed by tough ground this spring at Glen Rose post office.
The 1915 Grange year marked a record in Clermont County and Ohio with a University of Ohio class of 280 professors wives and students entering third and fourth degrees. A 625 member banquet followed as State Master Taber urged disciplined planning and hard work as keys to success. Amelia Grange hosted Pomona April 8 with 175 present. Reports from Felicity Monroe Carmel Jefferson Owensville Marathon Miami Williamsburg Bethel Cecelia Love land Amelia noted large classes and rising activity. Harriet Dickson Ohio State Grange advised expanding membership and teamwork to raise standards and urged stronger officer training and cooperation. The Pomona meeting closed at 4 pm and planned Owensville for July 1 1916.
Mrs Mattie Breeding widow of T P Breeding died at her daughter Mrs M S Griffiths home late Tuesday night after a long illness since her husband’s death in November. She belonged to the M E church and the Guild. Funeral services were held at the M E church Friday. Survived by two children Carl Breeding of Cincinnati and Mrs M S Griffith and a sister Miss Mollie Long.
Louise Ely daughter of Edwin and wife died at home Friday after a short illness. Funeral from residence Monday afternoon. A sketch by Miss Elma Townsley recalls her gentle nature, devotion in Sunday school and Junior league, and the family’s sorrow as she rests in the “Morning Land.”
Henry Wacker born May 7 1874 died March 27 1916 aged 41 years 10 months 2 days. He married Edith Maham November 2018 and had one child who died July 13 1910. He left a devoted wife a brother two sisters and many friends in a neighborly home guided by faith and memory.
Joseph G. Irwin born November 18 1843 in Bloom Rose Brown County Ohio. He served in Co B 83rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was discharged for wounds January 1 1868 at Arkansas Post. He married Nancy Thompson in 1866 and Harriet Foster in 1880s. had two children, daughter died young, son Clarence A. lives in Toledo. He moved to Williamsburg in October 1881 and joined the Presbyterian church at age 18.
For years fewer watches are reported for taxation, now thousands of dollars vanish. Age may deem them worthless and many taxpayers with only 100 to 500 dollars to their name hide them. The result is a demoralizing effect on the tax duplicate and a 60 percent penalty on unreported taxable property.
The Odd Fellows of Hill District celebrate the 97th anniversary in Newtonsville with an all day program on April 29 at the M E church. The afternoon session in the I O O F hall includes speeches recitations and songs by Alma Seward Phyllis Scott Alma Johnson Lida Beth Sutton and Rev Frank George with audience participation and a dinner break.
The Felicity high school's graduating class presents Diamonds and Hearts a light comedy on Friday evening April 28. Eight graduates mark a successful year with strong community support and a high standard of work. Audrey Williams Bethel assists in preparation Batavia orchestra provides music Dr Houck will preach the baccalaureate sermon.
The Farm Womens Sunshine Club met at Mrs. Honaker's home near Williamsburg on Thursday April 6. The program featured instrumental music, papers on Beauties of the country home and Easter in the World's Greatest City, a question box discussion on benefits from the past year, current events, a paper on Poultry Raising, and a petition to quarantine whooping cough. Mrs. Frank Walker was praised for her devoted presidency and Hazel Wise led singing and papers. Absent members included Miss Lou Connor Mrs. Curry and Mrs. Maude Breton. The gathering ended with ice cream and cake.
The Batavia band of 16 pieces furnished music at the Georgetown lot sale last Saturday. The sale was a success with many lots sold at good prices. Another sale followed on Tuesday and Georgetown will have plenty of room to spread. A Batavia lot sale could prove profitable.
Harvey Nathan Meek born near Owensville Clermont county Ohio April 4 1848 died nephritis April 10 1916 aged 73 years six days. Married Annie M Heath April 18 1882. Survived by wife two children Mrs John F Mayall Arapaho Oklahoma and P H Meek Wichita Kansas including three grandchildren. Moved to Kansas 1890 resided near Wichita until 1908 then farm north of Arapaho where he died.
Hillsboro reports the district’s most residents aged 85 and older with twenty citizens in the 86 to beyond-90 range. Batavia also notes a small number above 80, highlighting regional longevity differences.
Moscow High School plans a spring program on April 27 in Junior Hall featuring the class play Black Heifer a drama in three acts. The cast includes Eph Cincebox Swampscott Holter Raber Henry Cushard Charleton Du Ruyter George Cincebox Percy Dowell Willie Smith Detec tive Holscomb Squire Brown Rube Miller Mrs Arabella Simpkins Betsey Brown Scraps Vera Buchanan and others. A baccalaureate sermon is scheduled for April 23 by Rev L Davis.
Glenn O Swing of Clermont, senior at Ohio State University, was chosen to join Phi Beta Kappa the oldest college fraternity. Son of Clifford and Mrs Swing of Bethel, he graduated Bethel High School and works as a math department assistant.
The Junior League of the M. EK. church held services at the infirmary last Sunday with Rev. Martin in charge. The young folks traveled by auto and the inmates greatly enjoyed the visit as they look forward to future services.
Colbert Cecil, 82, a Catlettsburg Kentucky bank book keeper for 15 years, was sentenced to five years in the Atlanta penitentiary for concealing discrepancies totaling nearly $40,000 in five years. He was described as a good fellow fond of poker.
Paris Green a key pesticide for tobacco farmers is growing scarce and is being bought up for speculation. Traditionally sold at 60 cents a pound the chemical may fetch as much as 1 dollar in the current season.
Clermont county selects its entrant for the state spelling contest at Batavia on May 18 in the town hall. Contestants must be present by 10 o clock as spectators are accommodated. First prize of 10 dollars requires travel to Columbus on June 2. second prize is 5 dollars. All county school children are eligible.
Miss Edith Denham oldest daughter of E J Denham died at her sister’s home in New Richmond last Sunday aged 48. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p m with interment in New Richmond. She attended Batavia schools when her father was county treasurer and was well known locally. Her death followed a complication of diseases. She was a favorite among friends.
The Edenton Dramatic Club stages Kedijijah Judkins at Edenton town hall on Thursday night April 20. Proceeds go to benefit the Light Company. You are invited.
State authorities rounded up bootleggers in Manchester after a liquor scandal. About 50 witnesses testified before J. B. Galloway and J. N. Bonebrake, yielding 15 indictments. Some suspects fled, others denied guilt. one pleaded guilty with $200 fine and costs. A river boatman was fined $400 and ordered not to dock in Manchester again. More defendants expected.
In about 78 years of trials at Wooster, Strongsville, Germantown and Carpenter the acid phosphate at 80 to 120 pounds per acre produced a little more than 8 bushels of corn per 100 pounds of phosphate. The fertilizer was spread on all land with the grain fertilizer drill just before planting.

Residents of New Richmond reported a fire at G. W. McMurchy's house discovered by passers by early last week. The blaze was extinguished before substantial damage occurred aided by the town's effective fire alarm system.
Mrs Emma Henning wife of Will Henning died suddenly last Wednesday morning after weeks of illness leaving a husband and one son. Daughter of the late Nelson Lytle she lived on the old homestead and planned to move to a new home near Monterey which had recently been purchased. Funeral Saturday with burial in Union cemetery Batavia. She was highly esteemed and will be greatly missed.
The Woman's Club plans its next meeting on April 22 at the public library, causing a half day closure for patrons in the afternoon while the library stays open in the evening. A civic talk by Mrs. Kerper and talks by Miss Rawson and Mrs. Scott are on the program, with each member allowed one guest.
Day of pleading sees Charles Shorten Arthur Blythe Clyde Perry Clarence Haney John Marshall and Grant Moore plead guilty while William Habn and Frank Rust enter not guilty pleas following last week’s grand jury indictment.
