County Library Board seeks librarian and space amid rulings

Clermont County Library Board plans to hire a university trained librarian certified by the State library board at 3800 yearly and rent at least 1200 feet for a central office near the county center. The board seeks two trustees with appointments by the commissioners and Judge Britton. Bookmobile service will begin once staffing and space are secured.

Merger Suggested For Four Clermont Schools

J A Stine, head of the state educational construction program, recommends merging Batavia Amelia Williamsville Tabasco and Glen Este Mt Carmel districts in Clermont County into a single district. If Batavia cannot join, the trio should consolidate. The suggestion was sent to Robert Ludlow, Clermont County Citizens School Committee subcommittee chair.

Company B Near Strength In Alert

Clermont National Guard unit Company B of the 147th Infantry mobilized to 75 percent strength shortly after its alert in the nationwide Operation Minuteman test. The unit remained on duty for two hours after the zero hour, marking the first such alert in the nation. The test involved about 360,000 air and infantry National Guard members to gauge turnout and readiness for a real emergency.

Fire Volunteers Elect Officers in North Union Township

The newly formed North Union Township Fire Department elected officers at a meeting held at Glen Este Mt Carmel school. Over 60 persons attended as the group seeks a charter. A subsequent meeting is set for May 10 at 8:30 p.m. to finalize plans and elect more officers.

Locker Services Held for Ex-Councilman Jesse Locker

Services were held at Calvary Methodist Church in Cincinnati for Jesse Locker 63 former city councilman and US Ambassador to Liberia. He owned a country home near Newtonsville where his daughter Mrs Bunny Leslie lived. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Monrovia Liberia. A lifelong Republican Locker was elected to Cincinnati Council in November 1941 and led the Ninth Ward Progressive Republican Club and the Lincoln-Douglass Reple.

Burley Price-Quota Referendum Set For April 28

Clermont burley tobacco growers will vote April 28 on whether marketing quotas and price supports will apply to the 1955 crop. A separate secretary of agriculture referendum will test support for quotas. if less than two thirds approve, no quota or price support. Attendance urged to get facts before voting. Corresponding notice lists eligible voters from the 1954 crop and local officials.

Two Brothers Held On Morals Charge in Batavia

Eugene and Neal Robinson of Route 4 Batavia are jailed in Clermont on morals charges filed by the mother of an 11 year old Cincinnati girl. Sheriff Clyde Derricks and deputies arrested them early Tuesday. They await a preliminary hearing before Mayor J F Paschal.

Grand Jury Indicts 13 in Clermont County Counts

Thirteen indictments issued after a one day session. Seven counts against Josh West Jr. for issuing checks with insufficient funds and forgery. Alvin King charged on one NSF check. Herbert Davisson indicted for carrying a concealed weapon and impersonating an officer. John B. Wilcox indicted for failure to support four minor children. Robert Leon Merrick held for burglary. Other charges include assault, conversion, operating a vehicle without owner’s consent, and abandoning aRay Bradford and Ralph Hill appeared for the State. Sheriff and Mrs. Derricks praised for jail condition and jail expansion urged. A 225 voice chorus and 140 piece band will lead the Williamsburg music festival Friday night.

Wider Batavia Road Approach Seen For 1957

Road program lists 1957 projects across Ohio including State Route 74 widened west of Batavia, new bridges on multiple routes, and adding truck passing lanes. Funds total hundreds of thousands for right of way, bridges, and resurfacing. Specific works include routes 74 125 132 133 182 and 727 near Hamilton Clermont and Batavia, with new pavement and bridges planned.
